So what happened to the RAF after the Great War ended? I know they had to fight for survival until the Somaliland campaign and the air policies in the colonies helped them to demonstrate their usefulness, but which planes they used until the Fury family appeared? Can someone explain what happened to the Bristol F.2, the Camels... and what the RAF used for fighter scout and bombing during those years?

Thanks a lot!

-Sir in case of retreat, were we have to retreat??

In reading "Wind in the Wires" by whose name I forget off the top (and it a great and funny book) the aircraft from his squadron (56) were all destroyed in France as they were "demobilized."
IIRC this was in January 1919.
I suspect that was the fate of a large number of British aircraft in France.

I think his name was Duncan Grinnell-Milne.

You are correct. I was having a mental block with the hyphenated last name.
Anyway great book.

I see, so which fighters the RAF used in the 20's? Gamecocks, Grebes and Woodcocks?

Hawker Woodcock and Bristol Bulldog come to my mind.

Maybe Snipes? At least for the first part of the 20's I would think.

Snipes, Grebes, Gamecocks, and Bulldogs. In fact, it was in a Bulldog in the early 30s that Douglas Bader crashed and ended up losing his legs. One tough pilot. The British manufacturers kept some business producing planes for other countries here and there. They produced some Sparrowhawk fighters for Japan in the '20s.

My father joined 2nd Sept 1921. Spent most of his early time on Vickers Virginias at Manston (where he met my mother otherwise I wouldn't be here) He signed up for 24 years service but that didn't happen as he left the RAF sometime in the 30's and rejoined in 1939. Ended his service in 1958 as a Flt Sgt. My father was not good on fighters but certainly knew how to overhaul RR Eagle V12 engines.
