Chalk it up to crappy marketing research. The network figured that they could draw a larger and more expanded audience if they dropped the "SciFi" label because you know, science fiction scares off a lot of people.

Also because of trademarks. Scifi is a genre term. You can't copyright it. Syfy is a made up word, so you can. So they did.

I still think they meant it as a "cutesy" name for syphilis, to indicate and/or warn that the infection had reached their brains.
