Looking at replacing my old 65 inch tv. Was going to go with the standard 1080 LED Smart tv for $1,299. Saw that the new 4k was $1,999. Is it worth it or would I be getting something that is over hyped ?

It seems over hyped to me. For once there is not any media for the tv to be used at 4k unless you are a member of a very select group that has 4k broadcast. You can use some of that 4k if you hook up a computer to the input but even that doesnt seem worth it for a TV.

I think it depends on your future plans. If you expect to keep the TV for a while, you might want to get the 4K to be ready when more content comes out. In the meantime, I think you'll see a slight boost in quality, since I believe most 4K TVs upscale the content.

A friend of mine who's really into video stuff has said for a while now that your display device should be higher resolution than your signal for the best picture quality, because it allows more pixels to be used to each pixel from the signal, smoothing out motion. Sounds like a reasonable thought to me.

On the negative side, I would be worried about buying something now and have it turn out that by the time 4K TVs become standard, the connectivity has changed and your older set won't connect to the new devices (a new version of HDMI, for example).

Don`t buy any 4k tv until HDMI 2 is standard plugin on the TV. The HDMI 1.2 cables cannot handle
the bandwidth of 4k. I have a Dell 32" 4k monitor for my computer with a Displayport 1.4 on it.
And I get 60hz off it. There just is not enough 4k video to watch either. Youtube is the only
source online with 4k videos.

I have a 4k Sony camcorder coming today so can make my own 4k.

I don't think that there wil ever be something like Bluray disks for 4K. In all likelihood Hollywood and other film makers will probably prevent this for fear of piracy. Rather they will insist on webcast/streaming only. Which only makes sene if you have (or are planning to get) broadband internet access (in the 20...100MBit range, not your plain vanilla DSL) plus the subscription of some internet movie rental plan. So, if that fits your plans you might just as well become an early adopter.

I'd wait, you'd still be an early adopter and that's never a great idea.

Seems they already to start making Blu-rays for 4k next year.

The only way this would work though is the Blu-ray player and 4k Tv must be HDMI 2 ready.

Somehow, that link looks oddly familiar.... smile

Don't do it, OG. Current 4K TVs lack fast enough processors to handle the bandwidth. There are artifacts during movie playback and significant input delay during gaming. I'm in the same boat, but there is no worthwhile option at this time.

I believe in the 'don't be an early adopter' deal as well..this here sounds good though, in so far as keeping prices down anyway.

How the hell is a TV this beautiful so cheap ?

My impression is that 3D on these TVs is pretty hokey too. Would anyone recommend it ?

Uploading my first 4k video to YouTube right now, My Sony FDR-AX100 4k camcorder came this
afternoon, got it charged up and around dusk the deer came out and I captured some video of
them. One deer looked wounded, its side was all swelled up and it limping pretty bad, must have
had a bad encounter crossing the road. Will post it as soon as youtube finishes rendering it.

To funny Ken, posted 2 sec apart. LOL

It depends on the brand. Samsungs have less ghosting than LGs. None of them run 3D at full 4K resolution.

Well, I'll tell you in about a week. We will then be a two TV family. Old 46" goes to basement and new 65" 4k Samsung will be upstairs.

My partner has a sony 3d all the bells and whistles Tv. We used the 3d option twice when she first brought it, never worried about it again. Looked pretty good, but none of us are fans of wearing the 3d glasses, including the kids.

I recommend passive 3d if you do. Also, 4K does help with 3D because each eye can then run at full 1080p unlike previous 3d televisions.
