A Mk IF long range fighter in the markings of 23 Squadron RAF.

(not sure if the link works)

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

All I need to see flying now are these two... Sadly, zero chance of the Hampden but I understand a few Beauforts are under restoration.

I loved flying the Beaufort in IL-2 1946.

About 15 years ago I was chatting to a well dressed elderly gentleman while he was waiting for cataract surgery. After anaesthetising his eyeball and waiting to go into theatre I always talked to the patients just to get them relaxed and answer any questions they have.It turned out that this guy was a retired teacher and before that a pilot. A Beaufort pilot based in the South West of England covering the Western Approaches during WW2.
I had just finished reading Torpedo Pilot by Roy Conyers Nesbitt and this old guy was mentioned in the book! As I had shown interest he started to open up a little so I asked him did he take part in any well known missions. He told me that the whole Squadron were ordered to fly from Cornwall to Scotland and wait for further orders ,they were then told that they were to attack the Tirpitz !!
It was a one way mission - not enough fuel for the return so they were told either fly into neutral Sweden or ditch in the North Sea and let the carrier pigeon fly back to base with their location and await rescue !
Luckily for them ,some one high up in London decided to scratch the mission 24 hours before take off after realizing that a squadron of slow moving Beauforts attempting to torpedo the Tirpitz would only end in annihilation .
What heroes these guys were, not asking for gratitude or fame they "Just did the job we had to do". So I shook his hand and said " Thank you very much for what you did during your time in the services" much to his embarrassment !
If you can get hold of Roy Conyers Nesbitt`s book " Torpedo Airmen " - well worth a read.

Naunton Beauchamp Worcestershi...
Coincidence Simbo; I'm just reading a book by Arthur Aldridge, 'Last of the Torpedo Bombers' of his life flying Beauforts in 217 Sqdrn. 1 crew in 3 didn't return from missions. part from the obvious attention from the enemy, 'twas a bit of a buugger to fly he relates. Especially after flying so low that he lost 2ft. of wing tip sliced off by a ships mast rigging wire.

Brave men indeed.
