A burning question I've always pondered. The SCAR-H for instance only have 20 rounds, the H&K 417 as well. Why limit magazines to 20. 5.56mm weapons have 30.
To much stress on the spring in the magazine? To heavy in the vest pouches? What gives?

Probably to keep the weight and size practical. I can't imagine a 30 round HK G3 magazine being very handy, the 20 round ones sure were bulky enough as they were!

But if you have an M1A, there are some 50 round drum magazines that will give you a great workout.

They make them for several guns. I have two for my HK91's. They are quite good. Not bulky and length is good. Heavy when loaded. But 50 is much better than 20 when firing full auto bursts. I'll post pictures next time I take them to the range. Expensive at $250 each. http://www.xproducts.com

Surefire is another alternative if you are using 5.56 or 300 Blackout. I have a couple of the 60 round mags for my ARs. The larger 100 capacity are not practical. Better to go with the dual drum. http://www.surefire.com/tactical-equipment/high-capacity-magazines.html

This may help. Here is an HK91 with 20 round magazine. Here it is with a 30 round mag. If you can make it out, the weapon is now teetering on the base of the 30 round mag. The right front bipod is off the ground. And here it is with 50 round drum. Resting correctly on bipod and buttstock. And this shows that it isn't too bad on width or cumbersome other than a bit heavy because of the weight of 50 rounds of 7.62/308.

I'm probably going to pick one up soon. I have a 100 round drum for my AR, but you're right it's not the most practical, and its more maintenance intensive than the rifle! Heard a lot of good things about the surefire, and am kicking myself for not picking one up a while back for half price.

I have a couple of 30 round mags for my HK-91. As mentioned earlier, they really are too long if you are shooting in the prone position. Plus being unusually long, there are not a lot of magazine pouches that they would fit into properly. If somebody were to make a .308 HK-91 magazine similar to the Surefire Mag5-60 a more manageable 30, or 30+ round magazine could probably work... but they only make those for .223 as far as I know. Edit: Ah, I see the surefires got mentioned on page two. I posted this before going to page two. D'oh!

Didn't the 7.62x51 Galil use 25-round mags? I know the 5.56x45 mags held 35, with 50s available.

Canada used to have the FN C1 rifle, basically an SLR / FAL. It was issued with the very practical 20rd size. But we also had an LMG Automatic Rifle version, select fire but meant for full auto bursts, called the C2, and that was issued with 30rd mags. That were huge, bulky. Unwieldy.
Being prone with such vertical mags... not good. Generally not practical, was disliked by the troops. See, you need not only for it to clear the ground, but also clear the grass and shrubbery, and still allow for mag changes easily.
In the history of the FAL and other battle rifles, the ONLY time and place 30rd 762Nato mags were moderately wanted by troops, is in the south of Africa, in Rhodesian war, and when those same vets fought in Namibia for the SADF later in the 80's. That's IT.
Keep in mind you can't carry many rounds before it gets stupid heavy.

I've always liked the FN. I agree with Rick's comments. L1A1 with 20 round mag. With 30 round. I have a couple of the South African 30 rounders. They are hard to find and now are getting to be expensive. The FN doesn't look as wrong as the others with 30 round mags.
