In a telling article with Entertainment Weekly, Syfy proclaims the channel's new commitment to science fiction and the genre that originally made it great. But also in there is a quiet admission that when they dropped their core programming and turned from Sci-Fi into Syfy, they messed up.

But yet they still have crap like wrestling and Sharknado. Still, the change is very much welcomed.

Definitely a step in the right direction, but I think they announced these intentions a while back when that guy took over.
I don't mind the Sharknado movies, that's tongue in cheek fun. It's just when they were cranking those movies out CONSTANTLY that it sucked.
If they stick to a Sharknado once or twice a year (I think that's the intention) then that's ok.

A return to hardcore scifi in the form of mini-series is a good idea. With most "big" shows limiting us to 10-12 shows in a season, they could do 2-3 a year like that HBO style. Just don't break up the seasons as badly as they did Farscape please.

Agree. I'm mostly stoked about "Ascension" starring Tricia Helfer. I'll definitely be watching that.

I really hope these new projects get decent ratings though. If they don't, it may convince SyFy to go back to their previous format.

I like Warehouse 13 very much (it's a guilty pleasure, I guess), and I learned to appreciate Eureka. But I don't want these to be the only reasons to watch the channel. So, it sounds like they have a nice line-up. A 12 Monkeys TV series definitely has potential. A generation space ship too ... depending on how long they can delay the inevitable descent into the soap realm of focusing on human relations only.

Tricia is awesome. She was impressive in BSG and I'll be glad to see her in another series, whatever the format, and this does sound like a good one.

Ascension is just a mini, there's no plan to do anything else with it that I've heard (it's not like the BSG miniseries in other words).

I'm interested to see where Helix goes in its 2nd season, and I'll watch 12 Monkeys but I'm not sure how it can be a series. The film's story was very self-contained, so it will need to be rewritten somehow to make it weekly.

I'm still watching Haven, but I get the feeling it will end soon (it's on the dreaded 5th season, beyond which NO series on SFC has gone). Eureka, WH13, SG-1, BSG (which split it's 4th so that it was like a 4 and 5)...all ended after 5 years. Sanctuary surprised by ending after 4 due to ratings drops. Oh, and they moved it to Friday at 7PM?!?! WTF?? They WANT the ratings to go down so they can kill it I guess.

SFC needs a bunch of new shows PDQ because other than S2 of Helix they have nothing else coming back, and I'm doubtful Helix will last 5 years.

Too bad it's most likely that their return to scifi will just result in crap scifi shows instead of wrestling, etc. there must be an unwritten law that states nearly every tv scifi show has to be lousy, because 9 out of 10 are.

I hope we don't end up with more "sci fi" as in loosely scifi but really a cop show, conveniently set on present day Earth, or a Good vs Evil (an old actual show they did, but 70's), set in present day Earth, or a time travel based conflict, set in present day Earth. The only one of those shows that was actually good was Sarah Connor Chronicles, but even that got a little repetitive. It was the way they went to the future in the last cliffhanger that probably made fans miss it the most. That "Dominion" show was horrible.

Would be awesome if they would do a series based off of the Metro 2033/Last Light video games.

I would watch that. They could hire the Russian cast from Hunt For Red October!

Back when Directv started, they had anime on Sat mornings that was pretty cool.
Friday nights really were fun once upon a time. Farscape, Dr Who, some other show of the season. Seems like there were some decent shows sometimes, but I can't remember what all they had. I know they did reruns of Special Unit 2 that I friggin LOVED.

That would be a pretty old cast, no one under the age of 45 or so...

His holographic 19th century lady was the worst thing about that show.
