There was a fix for this by a registry edit in XP, but that has never been able to be applied in Vista or later operating systems. When Crashin' Jack got 1024x768 screens running it seemed to have fixed the problem, but we never knew why or how. However, I have now got it back both on my Win 7 desktop for all versions and on my Vista Laptop for 1.2 and 1.28c. The solution is simple- if I run EAW via the d3d windower program I do not get the garbled map problem. Fortunately although I cannot use the d3d windower for a lobbied launch at GameRanger, the map screen is not used for target/base selection for the online game. However, for all other aspects of the game I need to use the windower. Jel

Fortunately for my EAW, I am still using an XP machine. I believe I used the registry fix, but it's been so long, I can't remember. lol! I am exclusively using the no-cdf 1.40 version and am wondering if it is no longer possible to utilize this map with this version?: The current 1.40 map does not center without having to scroll, it is very non-descript, and the plane icons are green and an off-red. Sometimes I need the borders and names. I miss the old map! Thanks, AO

You can have the old map in the earlier versions but not in 140. 140 uses a flexible tilemap and is not locked into 640x320, so a new map system based on the tilemap had to be created. What has been created is very basic, but it is accurate. Targets, frontlines and icons are placed accurately. I have requested that somebody take one of the "bmp" or "pcx" files from which the map was created, and make a much nicer version whilst retaining the land-water outline. Unfortunately nobody has offered to do this, so we are still using the originals based on the "eaw23.tm" file with limited colours

Roller The target editor makes the plain map from the eaw32.tm file, or an option to produce a coloured map from the eaw16.hm file based on height. Converting one of the coloured ones gave me these: Single mission target selection In game flight map Some quality has been lost in conversion of the bmp screenies to jpg.

I am now experimenting with my map maker. It loads the palette that the game uses, and from it I can pick the colour of the water and the land for the simple two colour map. As a result nothing is lost when photoshop converts the BMP to a PCX using the game pallete because the colurs match exactly These are in game screenies converted to jpgs to display here: Selection screen: In game flight map: There was some colour loss in the conversion to jpg for posting.

Here is the utility: It needs to be run in a folder like this: The "eaw32.tm" and the "eaw16.hm" files must be in the same folder as the program, along with the palette file. You load the palette, click on a colour in the palette and then in the "water" box. Then you select the land colour in a similar way. Then you click "Start" and it does the job. Then it is a matter of loading the "Targmap.bmp" file with Photoshop, and converting to the "Targmap.pcx" using the same palette. After that PicPac will make the "TargMap.pic" The one I was making was for SPAW- here is an in game screenie:

By making some adjustments to the program, including allowing the user to set the draw-width size I have been able to make some very large maps. The downside is that a lot of scrolling needs to be done to select targets and bases. The up side is that the battle area in the in-flight map is well spread and the icons are not bundled together as closely as they used to be. I am now wondering if I can adjust the code to use a small version for selection screens, and the big one for in flight
