Well I've played quite a bit more with various resultions. Unfortunately what may be the opimal settings are with non-standard resolutions between 1280x960 and 1600x1200. At these resolutions the views are often off centre and lacking the bottom lines for text info on the external screens. And not this is not due to the vertical and horizontal positions for the monitor.

As before with a customised graphicsd.cfg and ingame settings:

My conclusion is that with a highend system this game is certainly playable at 1600x1200 with AA and AF enabled. After some quick playing with more object intensive missions I found that with rain in the MiG-29 Intercept track there is a greater slowdown by around 6-8 FPS. In that case the optimal resolution before the FPS drop-off was at 1280x960.

Still more reseach probably needs to be done and with other tracks but for now I'm thrilled to be playing this sim at the highest reoslution and be far more efficient at pegging off vehicles with the A-10 cannon and Mavericks. High res with anti-aliasing is a beaut!

So, check the ram on your card! Is yours a TRUE ATi or another brand? Some cards use different RAM with various speeds and some can OC better than others.
Hey, I've got a real ATI 9800np, but with Infineon 3.0ns RAM as far as I can tell. What's that formula to derive max speed from the ns rating again? I know you use the speed and the bandwidth (128 or 256 bit) but I totally forgot it.
I've OC'd my RAM to about 310, but if I push it to 315 I get artifacting. I've only got the VPU at 331, are you saying I should be able to go to 380??!? I could've sworn it was locking on me at higher speeds, but that was when my PC was BSOD'ing all the time because my CPU got damaged (long story).

Well, a buddy of mine just sold me his old 19" monitor for $40 so now I can test Higher Resolutions!

In game settings are same as above screenshot, but with Basic Haze and Active Planar Shadows

Here are my “Beta -SW-” test track data:

=======================================================
AthlonXP 2400 and R9600XT
A-10A - HIGH LOMAC graphics – 1024x768x16bit (2xAA/8xAF)
9600XT stock speed – 500/600 (297)
2003-12-04 16:29:42 - LockOn
Frames: 12196 - Time: 647672ms - Avg: 18.830 - Min: 8 - Max: 65

Using my preferred MEDIUM LOMAC graphics – 1024x768x16bit (2xAA/8xAF)
I got -- Average 33.3 – Min 8 – Max 82
====================================================
My AthlonXP2400/R9600XT is within 10 percent of Beta's Pentium 4 2.6GHz/R9800Pro result just below
A-10 - HIGH - 1024x768(4xAA/8xAF) High Quality
9800 Pro Speed - 381/684(342)
2003-11-26 21:04:31 - LockOn
Frames: 13013 - Time: 653843ms - Avg: 19.902 - Min: 9 - Max: 69

To my eyes, both systems AthlonXP/9600XT and P4 2.6/9800pro would look about the same (I can't actually SEE ten percent). So, the 9600XT at $165 was worth it, to me.

My System:
AthlonXP 2400+, 512MB of 266MHz DDR
Abit NF7 version 2.0 (Nforce 2) BIOS 6A61BA1BC-19
Windows XP
Sapphire OEM Radeon 9600XT, Catalyst 3.10beta
Audigy MP3
Sony DW-U14A DVD/CD-R/W
No overclocks or tweaks

Excellent scores! Try it with 4xAA/8xAF, and post those - can you try higher resolutions also? I just got a 19" monitor so I'm testing higher res now - LOMAC looks great at 1280x1024! \:D

Edit: Do you have the ATI control panel set the same as me in Direct3D tab? We should have every thing as similar as possible to be able to compare various systems/video cards.

As you can see, just changing the Water option alone has a HUGE effect on framerates. CPU Speed does not have much of an effect at all with this test.

Tomorrow I will test 1600x1200! ;\)

Per request,

AthlonXP 2400 / R9600XT at stock speeds

Interestingly, "high quality" on my Cat 3.10beta is 2xAA/8xAF -- as I used for the tests in my above post. 4xAA is beyond high quality.

No doubt, the R9800pro is faster when set up identically.

The trick with the R9600XT is to minimize the negative impact of 128bit wide memory interface (R9800 has 256bit wide). If one does that with something simple, like 2xAA instead of 4xAA (which is the default "high quality" AA on my ATI control panel), or 16bit color in place of 32bit, one gets the good framerates without a visual hit (that I can see).

This has been a useful exercise. I found out a little more about how to set up my card. In any case, running LOMAC at HIGH graphics becomes unplayable for me in the worst situations.

Hey, thanks Allen for running that test! BTW - I never noticed a difference between 16 and 32 myself in testing.

Beta SW,

And hello to all

To conduct this test, do you engage any of the targets or just put aircraft on autopilot. What exactly are you doing during this so that I may offer the same varibles for this test. I will do both the FPS Test and the Combat FPS test. I am curious how my laptop stacks up with the high power rigs.

Dude out

LoMan already tweak graphics.cfg file and it's working fine also

why are you tweaking graphicsd.cfg ?
sound like graphics.cfg file and graphicsd.cfg file do the same thing.

a bit strange to have both file in config folder

best regards
