So gents, I have a throttle pot in my HOTAS Cougar that yesterday decided not to register its full range of movement. I took it apart - cleaned it and still doesn't go to max throttle. Now, I noticed that depending on the position of the throttle pot, the other 2 pots for the rotates and microstick would or would not register full range of motion. I know the pots are based off of electrical resistance, but how could the position of the throttle pot affect the measurements of position of the other rotary pots? They are not physically connected AFAIK! I need help to solve this, thanks!

Sounds like you pinched a wire or two when you reassembled -really easy to do with a Cougar throttle. While the TM FCS pedal's stock pots are wired for resistance, all the pots inside are normal 3-wire/divider.

Thanks, where would I look for the pinched wire? Would it be in the handle? Or in the base? When I took the base out yesterday I didn't see any pinched wires but I can look again. Also odd that it just started happening, it has been quite a long time since I had the throttle handle open...

I'd check in the arm that connects the handle and base.

There's not a whole lot of clearance in there, and it's very easy to pinch wires between the screw hole walls in the plastic throttle arm and the metal plate that covers it from the outside if you're not careful reassembling it all together.

Thanks gents! So a bit of an update:

On the night of the 13th I decided to unplug the stick from my computer, open up the base as I originally said (And I didn't see anything as I stated, so I cleaned the pot for good measure), reconnect and try it out. Well that didn't work so I unplugged it from my PC and of course asked what to look for above before I tore into the throttle more...

Today I finally had some time to look further into the throttle, but before I did I decided to plug the stick in to the PC for good measure, BECAUSE I had just remembered I discharged some static electricity to the joystick handle base... Well my throttle pot and rotary pots are working just fine now! No anomaly of the pots spiking as I move the throttle handle either. It would seem the stick didn't take kindly to me discharging against it. I'll keep an eye on the throttle pot and let you all know if it comes back.

Well, the issue has returned... So I opened up the throttle handle and didn't see any pinched wires or shorts. Could a bad throttle pot really cause these issues?

I remember when my throttle pot started acting up out of the blue, but my fix was to install a Hall sensor kit I had bought off here not long after it started (alongside some UTM bushings). Never had throttle axis issues after that.

If worst comes to worst, you'll have to replace that pot. Too bad Hall sensor kits aren't that easy to find these days, but maybe you can whip up your own fix if you're not afraid of a little soldering and fabrication.

Well, I had another pot laying around so I replaced it. Thus far the issue has been resolved, as I just spent the last 1 1/2 hours playing Rise of Flight online without issue.

I really want the Hall sensor kit for my throttle but it is no longer being made. frown I do have the bushings though, as well as the Uber II Nxt mod with Hall sensors for the stick and they're wonderful! At the beginning of next month, I will be getting my hands on the RCS pedals with Hall sensor mod already in-place and then I only have the throttle to worry about!

I have a similar Problem from time to time. Since a couple of days my throttle only goes back to 30% or somewhere near that. When i deactivate the Emulation mode and restart the throttle sometimes works flawlessly. But after a restart i have the same Problem again. Could the reason be the pot itself? I havent been playing alot during the last two years. The throttle maybe was stuck too long in the minimum postion? Maybe i should try to clean the pot or replace it. I have an original pot lying around Here.

Problem solved. Cleaning the pot was without success of course. Found a spare one, which i got 10 years ago for free from TM and replaced it with the old one. Now the throttle works flawlessly.

I have a HOTAS cougar where I am only getting about 40% throttle in both directions.
I have no idea what a POT is or where to find and clean it or how to replace it.
Any good video tutorials as it seems to be my problem.

DIY hall sensor is easy and will fix one and for all the throttle arm issue (though the only way to have full travel on ant and range pots will be to buy a TUSBA).

this is not my throttle but ui found an image that show very well how to place the magnets
