NVIDIA TurfEffects https://developer.nvidia.com/turfeffects I posted this in DCS World, but they quickly buried it in the Chit Chat forum. It may be worth adding to EDGE, if its an improvement without adding frames.

We don't know yet how costly the Nvidia solution is in performance, as it hasn't been released and compared too the performance of EDGE grass.

We don't know yet how costly the Nvidia solution is in performance, as it hasn't been released and compared too the performance of EDGE grass. Nvidia stuff tend to be not optimized for AMD. AMD stuff, get optimized for Nvidia, eventualy. And in general, games tha involve a lot of multiplayer should avoid proprietary stuff.

I don't really care about AMD/Nvidia, and just buy whoever puts out the best product for my combat flight sims. I haven't bought AMD cpus or gpus for quite sometime as Intel/Nvidia has fewer issues. The grass would just be an Option Nvidia users could use just like the better Water option in IL-2 a few years ago. The is nothing worse than dumbing down a product to suit the lowest common denominator, when setting Options are available.

Why not skipping over dx11 and go Mantle? It should be better than it for sims.

We are not sure which will work better yet, Mantle or the Nvidia DX12 equivalent.

DX12 will obviously be because it's hardware agnostic. Besides, what I've seen of Mantle so far has disappointed. I was picturing much larger gains. Perhaps DX12 will be capable of giving that AND it will work with any company's video hardware not just one. The Jedi Master

This is really just one of many solutions for rendering various effects that the GameWorks middleware provides. Not much point in utilizing it as GameWorks tends to run poorly on AMD hardware; and none of it is really suited for large-scale simulation rendering (except perhaps e.g. the ocean packages or fluid dynamics (Smoke etc.)).
Eagle has fantastically skilled rendering engineers on staff -- and as you've seen, a new grass rendering solution has already been developed and looks great.

I'm sure that the EDGE new grass rendering is a nice solution. I'm not suggesting that Nvidia is the only solution, but why right it off without atleast looking at it. These complex combat flight sims need all the optimizations they can find to free up resources. If it works better than their solution, and doesn't require alot of work to implement, use it, if not don't. If its doesn't work with AMD systems, have it as an "Option" for Nvidia systems, if its worth implementing.

Seems kind of impractical for a flight sims...how much time do you spend on the ground? (with the exception of Combined Arms).
This would be sweet in something like the Arma series! I agree to a point as I only fly airstart night missions. Not much fun but my frame rate is good.

NVIDIA TurfEffects https://developer.nvidia.com/turfeffects I posted this in DCS World, but they quickly buried it in the Chit Chat forum. It may be worth adding to EDGE, if its an improvement without adding frames. It's funny how everytime nVidia make's a new Tech Demo Engine people want it integrated into DCS. First the nVidia Weather, Then the Smoke then the nVidia Oceans, then the Terrain, now the Grass Engine? I doubt that would be feasible on a 400km x 400km map

Cliffs Of Dover for instance implemented grass on a map just as large as DCS. All I'm saying is that Nvidia implementation is "variable" and "may" be less resource hungry than COD's, BOS's or DCS EDGE future implementations.

nothing to do with change,
its more along the lines of people simply don't understand its not feasible to integrate every propriety engine that comes out.
Especially when you already have your own engine.

It has nothing do with having your own game engine either. Nvidia turf software isn't its own game engine. Its a question of whether or not the software can be implemented and is worth implementing into an existing game engine.

The only Game you'll ever see this in is prolly a sports game with a field.
