So I fired up the Huey after a VERY long break. I was wanting to trim off some of the stick forces and hit the T key. Well, the cyclic locked up and started me into a spin. IIRC, it did not do that previously.

So what is it used for and how do I go about trimming off the stick pressure?

I guess you really need to read that page about the trim in the Huey from the manual. Very simple yet important.

TL;DR: It doesn't workas trim in Airplanes. Nope.

The trimmer in the UH-1 is of the type where a button is pressed to unlock the artificial feel and when released reengages the artificial feel devices at the new cyclic position. Normal spring centered joystick don't do this physically. To prevent large off-center trim inputs from being immediately doubled ED introduced two options.

The first is a timed blend of old and new inputs to soften the jump of input. The second is called "central trimmer mode" where the game freezes input until the controllers (X, Y, rudder) are returned to a window around zero input.

It sounds like you are in central trimmer mode and are being locked out because you aren't putting the controllers back to center after trim event.

What I read in the manual was that the button had to be pressed and held to engage? Should I do this in the hover? Like I said, this isn't the Huey of old which I got good at flying. This new function is putting me off a bit. Thanks Frederf. I appreciate your help.

It's an optional method of dealing with not having a force-feedback joystick that really wants one. You should be able to turn it off. I don't like it and turn it off in the Ka-50. I'd rather jerk the helicopter around and break something than crash because a "helper" feature prevented me from having control.

In real life (or with FFB joystick) you would feel what happens when trim button is pressed. It's like if the spring breaks in your joystick. There's no resistance and it flops any way easily. When you release the button the spring is felt again in the new location.

There's no real official technique I know and if you have a normal spring joystick it makes no difference either way. Personally I like to hold the required input(s) and when satisfied this is the trim position I want I tap trim, relaxing my control pressure afterward within 0.5-1.0 seconds.

When I first flew the Ka-50 I was too quick to press the trim button. I pulled the controls to some place and trimmed before the helicopter settled into a steady state and I knew this was the right input to trim. Slowing down and holding my control pressure in the new position for 2-3 seconds before trimming helped my flying.

What stick are you using? Several of them such as the MSFF2 need the force axis reversed or it pulls the stick all over the place and sends you off into spins.

I've got the CH HOTAS. I'll spend some more time with it and try letting off the input. Just a different process than I remember.

Again, I appreciate the positive help.

The trim definitely has changed since the early versions - I also recently started playing again and was quite confused. The new system seems fine once you get used to it, and if you have a Force Feedback stick, take the time to adjust the strength.

I dont have a FF stick, so the trimmer is pretty useless to me. I do like the earlier version as it worked. No matter what, the helo just locks up when it's engaged so I've taken to not using it. Oh well...

Wilco. Thanks Fred. I'll look into it.
