Do you get excited when you see a beer tap?

I do.

I love everything about pubs ... the architecture, the warm and cozy old world atmosphere, the history, the woodwork, the taps, the bar, the stools, the memorabilia ... EVERYTHING! (even the pubs we have here in Canada).

Ive had some of the most memorable times of my life in one pub or another, most of which have probably been torn down or converted by now.

Since I dont frequent them anymore, Id love to see some SimHQ member's favorite local pubs! Dont skimp on the details either! (that sounds creepy doesnt it? smile )

Cheers! cheers

(strange but cool pub I frequented many moons ago here in Toronto)

Anybody who's spent time in Raleigh in the last few years has probably heard of the little slice of heaven known as The Goat.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Goat-Bar/135876629654

Nestled in a section of Western Boulevard that is a step above being a demilitarized zone, and in the same building as a "family style" restaurant best known for the quality of the grease on its fried okra, The Goat is a staple for the North Carolina State University crowd. At least, those who are brave enough to venture within its doors. As well as divorced 50-something cougars who prey on the innocent young engineering students who are there for the cheap drink specials.

Oh, the drink specials! Every Sunday is Mystery Beer night- a tub is set up behind the bar, and for a dollar, one of the bartenders will fish you out a beer from the tub. Your chances of ending up with a Stone Ruination are just as good as ending up with a Natty Light. True story. Every other night of the week, there are other drink specials, and any time, Knob Creek is $3 a shot.

And then there are the bartenders! The perfect combination of surly, witty, and just devious enough to instigate all kinds of shenanigans on a regular basis. It's not unusual to have one of them convince sorority sisters stopping by after a formal to dance on the bar with the overweight 50 year-old with the Tweety Bird tattoo on her upper chest. And then, when said sorority girl's boyfriend gets into a fight with one of the wannabe gangster-types who lives down the street, that same bartender will break up the fight with the pink, 18 inch dildo she keeps behind the bar.

And then there are the bathrooms. I can't post a picture, but I'll share this link:
http://www.urinal.net/the_goat/

As for architecture, Pam's Farmhouse/ The Goat is the definitive example of the mid-century Eastern North Carolina architectural style:

http://www.city-data.com/businesses/244645073-goat-raleigh-nc.html

If you couldn't tell, I'm a fan, and a regular there when I have the time.

'The Vic' (Victoria) in Darwin used to be our place of choice many many years ago. Sit on a Balcony overlooking the mall and the Darwin nightlife before we would hit the clubs. Very historic pub, lots of Aviation and crocodile and Buffalo hunter heritage. It was the first stone building in Darwin in 1890, survived a bunch of cyclones with it's roof ripped off three times , last time in '74 to Tracey. Survived the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese in WWII. I'm pretty sure the soldiers riot that took place there was in the movie Australia because i'm damn sure i recognised the Vic when i watched that movie a while back.

In 1897 after a cyclone.

1941 after the soldier riots.

1972 .. before the mall went in.

Current Vic.

Something about us Americans being too uncouth to appreciate a proper pub? duck

Yeah that's what I figured and it doesn't surprise me he would say something like that. It's his modus operandi.

Here a "Pub" and "Bar" have a different connotations than in the UK, here you can find ladies of negotiable affection in pubs. If you want to go out for a drink you would go to a caf, if you want a short time with a professional lady you go to a pub biggrin

It has been confusing to say the least!

The notice outside one pub in the town says:
"Nieuwe meisjes zachte prijs" "New Girls soft prices"

Scruffy Murphy's Irish Pub here in Columbus just down the road from were I live. The reviews seem to be quite negative these days concerning the service, but I haven't been there in a long time. Still, it is a beautiful pub. The fish and chips I had were awesome!

Small world! I guess you would have seen me in there then, I was behind the bar most nights. We sold up in 1993 and I moved south not long after that.

SimHQ is great for many reasons and this is one of them. It's a small world indeed!
