I have an problem when I go into Options -> Controls -> Custom Keyboard. There is a long list of keys and key combinations on the left side. The idea is to drag game functions from the list on the right to the key or key combination you want to map to. I cannot scroll the list of keys on the left. The list always starts with a red box on "Joy2 Hat U" meaning that is the selected key. When I try to scroll, it quickly jumps back to Joy2 Hat U. If I press a key or key combination on my keyboard, for example the letter G, the list will scroll to the normal letter G and in this case show that it is mapped to landing gear. As soon as I release the letter G, the list snaps back to Joy2 Hat U. So my first thought is that a controller, joystick 2, is sending the hat switch up command. After unplugging every USB device except the mouse and keyboard, it still behaves this way. So I'm thinking that maybe the f18keys.ini file is messed up. For a test, I rename my ini file with all my custom mapping for controllers, and copy a stock f18keys.ini file into the f18 directory. Still no difference. I also tried the reset button to set everything back and that had no effect either. I'm on TSH 4.02. Has anyone run into this?

Something is sending constant Joy2HatU messages which unfortunately keeps you from using the in game method to edit the keyboard map since, as you found, it will keep returning to the Joy2HatU. You can hand edit the f18keys.ini file. I think there was a list of all the things you could map out there somewhere but a quick look didn't find it. Thanks for the info Elf. I think you are totally right that something is sending Joy2HatU. I unplugged all my USB devices. Now I'm second guessing whether I unplugged my TrackIR. I wonder if that has something to do with it as I would expect the hat switch has something to do with panning the camera view. I'll try some of the things in the CH forum too. Thanks for your help, and also for your involvement in a fantastic sim.
