I know its a bit late, but I wanted to remind everyone that today was Britain's Greatest Naval Victory. The Battle of Trafalgar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Trafalgar"England expects that every man will do his duty" Salute to your country! (Still glad we beat you!)

I knew that Tim. Thanks for remembering, and all honour to Lord Nelson and the gallant tars of the old Navee. Sorry to our French and Spanish members, but you did lose big-time...suck it up. EDIT Actually there's two others worth mentioning...1588 the Armada, and 1916 the High Seas Fleet.

A fantastic victory. In 2012 I stood at the exact spot aboard the HMS Victory where Nelson was shot, at the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth. Just finished Blue At The Mizzen, the last book in the Aubrey/Maturin series, for the third time or so. An amazing series of books that everyone should read
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Didn't want to wiki to much on it as i might start searching around for the series. Last series of books i read that kept me hooked was Amtrak Wars..amd that was a fair while back The net killed off a lot of my reading and i've barely picked anything up in the last ten years or so.

Here's a little bit of trivia.
We all know that Nelson didn't survive the battle but the commanding French and Spanish admirals weren't so lucky either...
Pierre-Charles Villeneuve - On 22 April 1806, he was found dead at the Htel de la Patrie in Rennes with six stab wounds in the left lung and one in the heart:
Nasty. A verdict of suicide was recorded..that's some dedication right there. I couldn't imagine stabbing myself one time let alone seven, whew.

You really owe it to yourself to read the books! The story is hugely engaging, the characters have great depth to them, and the underlying friendship is very well played out throughout the series. Like a reviewer said about the series: "I envy those who have yet to discover the wonderful world of Aubrey and Maturin". In fact, I wish I could "un-read" the books so I could discover them again! I visited St Paul's Cathedral a couple of weeks ago.
Nelson (and several of his Trafalgar captains) and Wellington lie in it's crypt. The view from the top was pretty special too. Can I go back down now, please. Was there in 2011. A reverential moment to be sure, seeing Nelson's tomb.

A reverential moment to be sure, seeing Nelson's tomb. Definitely. You read about these people and see their portraits but to be standing there (with few others around) was pretty special.
