Been a while since my last flight with BMS.
Yesterday night I was in Escort role for a Deep Strike package. After a long uneventful flight into enemy territory I got downed by an SA-2. My legitimate justification that I was merely passing through and stearing for the exit already, fell unheard -- of course.

Alright...
... I expected no SAM to be there...
... I was almost on its vertical when it launched...
... and I'm so rusty I might have cycled the LMFD page instead of chaffing for the first few seconds.

Up till now I thought my EWS programs were decent.
I begin to question them.

So what are the progs (1 through 6) you guys use, and when?

I never finish anyth

I use default prgm 1 och 4 only.
#1 while surfing at angels 25 and #4 when going down low and personal.

But I try to manouver to escape and only use chaffs as extra attempt to spoof those evil sticks.

Avoid flying over any search radar in case the AI makes a SAM trap on you, it is pretty hard to evade getting launched at that vertical position you describe - dive like a madman and go insane on decoys but you'll endup low where other evil creatures live.

On BMS, I have my programs set depending on how I'm flying. I have a mostly-chaff program for flying at altitude, a mostly-flares program for flying in the weeds, a 30-70 chaff-flare timed program for runway strikes, a chaff-only program and a flare-only program (for dogfighting).

The exact timing and cycles I can't remember now.

HSD should be the thing to watch, but in BMS I think the info is highly reduced compared to AF or FF where threat circles are there (they are supposed to be pre-programed and logged in the HSD).

Yeah. In AF, everything auto-magically appeared and I think they disappeared auto-magically too. In BMS, you'll have to input the threats to the DTC before the flight and have to manually take them off when you think they're no longer a factor.

I would say the RWR is the thing to watch. If you've not programmed your HSD/DTC but you see a SAM spike on your RWR, well, you know what to do!

In BMS you can also set threat circles.

Well, RWR is first choice of course, but if you see the thread there, you are painted by the SA-2 radar system and a launch is imminent, so you have to go defensive. SA-2 is not a high manoevrable missile, so go ECM fly towards the ground after chaffing, that should waste the missile copter

How's that I cannot get STT in FF, BMS, AF? Humm...(keep that secret please...)

Oh yes... lovely, lovely threat circles. Do note that you can set two values for this as well... I think it was max-range vs. engagement-range or something like that? In any case, I set it on the smaller value.

One situation where pre-programed threats, or a EWS program would be essential is Naval Strikes where you may face the SA-N-6, the most habile and dangerous missile. Here it's an advantage to rely on a threat circle that delimits the Death Zone for about 35-40 miles when using the AGM-84 or equivalent AG missile. Every second you get meeans live instead of death. The problem: ships are moving assets. It once happened to me to think I was 50 miles from the target, and then: oops... I was painted and the threat was 15 miles away! I lost all my wingmen, I had to jettison my AG stores and get out.

In reality such thread updates are carried out by a similar system used by Nato (L-16). The interaction of your plane with assets like AWACS, JSTARS or else is essential in modern air warfare, this is not going to be modelled in BMS (I made a prudent post recently and was kinda laughed at).

The model in FF 5.5.5 is there (using the HSD), but it's far from realistic of course: It would need active input from all friendly assets or ground intelligence. So, yes, magic appearances and random distrubance of the signals. But still it's the best they have done.
