- (problem solved. Disregard post below. Thanks)
My mother-in-law is dating an 89 year old man that I've grown very fond of. He was a Naval Academy graduate, but didn't make a career of the military. He is in great mental and physical condition (considering his age), and freely talks of his time aboard ships, particularly a destroyer named Shelton on which he was slightly injured by shore bombardment while off North Korea in 1952.
A couple of years ago I did a random search online for information on the ship I was on (America), and came up with a picture of the ship in a small diorama that I thought was excellent. Recently I made an effort to find out who built it, and it turns out to be a man in Greece. His work (in varying scales), as you can see below, is exceptional.
The idea began building in me to see if he might build a diorama of the USS Shelton during it's fateful encounter off Korea. I could make it a 90th birthday present. Well, shock of shocks, after an email the builder said he indeed would! The details (and cost) have yet to be decided, but my question is.. Is it a real possibility that the old veteran might find a depiction of an event that injured, and could have killed him, an inappropriate presentation? I believe he will love it, but there are lingering doubts..
