Hey guys, looking to pick up a new processor/board combo for the B-Day and wondered if you had any suggestions?
I am currently running an Intel i7-2600 @ 3.4 GHz and not sure what would be the best bang for my buck... I've been checking out Newegg and Pricewatch for combo deals and am certainly open to ideas.
Thanks!

I'm currently running Windows 7 64 bit on 8GB RAM with a NVidia GTX 660 2GB RAM, I believe...

When I get on my desktop later I'll post the MB and CPU that I just got.
It eats WOFF for breakfast and I am almost always at max FR.

Rick,have you checked if your motherboard can accept faster cpu?Seeing as you are running an I7 its more than likely you will have option to get faster one.But you also have to see if you can overclock your present before wasting anything.Sorry if this is common knowledge.

Thanks for the tips, Wolfstriked, I will try both of those!

DukeIronHand, would appreciate the info!

Hey Rick,

It does really depend on what you'll be using the PC for, but I'll assume that you want to get the most performance in WOFF.

I'm running an i5-2500K and used to have a 680GTX 2GB. I'll compare performance by the FPS I got during compression. I was able to get 5 FPS while using 8x compression above NML. After upgrading to a 290X 4GB, I can get 15-18 FPS with 8x compression over NML (and use ATI's supersample!) I believe that the extra vram is what did the trick more than the gpu speed.

I've poured over the internet and asked on forums about a cpu upgrade and always got the same reply that current games will not give me any significant performance boost... maybe 2-3 extra FPS, but I'll need to spend above $300 on a cpu/mobo combo. Not worth it IMHO.

Your other option is to upgrade your monitor to a larger one and preferably IPS display. You'll notice a huge difference in colors and your ability to see tiny dots (very far away objects) clearly on your monitor without squinting.

To sum up, I recommend either a 4GB gpu or an upgraded display.

I'm running an AMD 8350 on a Sabertooth.
I know every one says intel blasts AMD, but the price was right back in early 2013.
I'm not a wealthy man and this was my first build.
AMD runs 'boost' at 4.3, stock at 4.0

What have you overclocked your i7-2600 to before you drop some cash for another PC.

If you can get you CPU to over 4.0 with a newer video card, you will not need another PC for WOFF.

CPU = i9 11900K
GPU = RTX 3080 Ti
Monitor = ASUS ROG Swift PG32UQX 2160p G-sync

It's not overclocked at all right now. I was just going to pop a new board into the same case I've been using for the last three builds.

Oldhat, thanks for the tip, I usually try to slingshot my processor and video card purchases, and this time the processor is older. Will have to look into both, I guess biggrin

OK Rick the CPU is:

CPU Type
Intel Core i7
CPU Speed
4790 (3.6GHz)
L3 Cache Per CPU
8MB
CPU Main Features
64 bit Quad-Core Processor
Max Turbo Frequency 4.0GHz

The motherboard is a Dell proprietary board but the model number is 0KWVT8.
A link to its specs is http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/dell-0kwvt8-mainboard-specifications/
With this info, weak though the info is at second glance, you can find a aftermarket board as good or better.

And 16 GB of RAM.

Win 7 Pro 64-bit.

I bought this machine for WOFF and have been very very happy so far.
Performance wise (as measured in FR) it takes WOFF to the woodshed.

Good luck sir and Happy Birthday!

Rick:

Check my specs, I have nearly the same rig. If you can get a good processor cooler, I'm at 4.1 GHz - and I'm pretty conservative, the wing commander wouldn't take kindly to me frying a processor for no good reason. And I fly at all 5's except for the aircraft, so I can see how shot up I am!

Now I've never been in a 20-plane furball, so maybe that will make a difference. But I don't have any problems at all with this rig (other than the one I posted on the OT thread about the native CFS3 sim, and I'm sure that's just software).

Best,

Tom

I'm going for an i7-4790K running at 4.0Ghz stock speed with a Asus Z97 Pro motherboard.

Thanks, HumanDrone,

Maybe I'll do some overclock tweaking and see what I can cvome up with...

I am lucky as my motherboard has a utility that allows me to overclock by simply choosing from different settings and have a cpu that overclocks with no complaints.I chose the extreme overclock option in windows,rebooted and PC started up and has been great ever since.I run an I5-3500k(3.40ghz) at 4.4ghz with no issues at all.

Rick,

Just watch your temperatures and keep the cooler clean! I've heard that with a good (circulating) liquid cooler you can get these to 4.8 - 4.9 GHz. My cooler is only passive liquid, so like I said, I step carefully and watch my temperatures.

Best,

Tom

That is good for "future proofing".
Pick a MB that has upward capability for better CPUs

What kinda case you housing it all in?

I love my Tt Chaser MkI;

Hey, watch the video...
not sure if it was all the dust screens, the easy access and install for drives dvd and hhd and ssd...

...or just Jo-anne doing the demo...?

But it was my first build and it was easy.
The hard part was coming up with the cash.

Best Wishes which ever way ya wander on your quest!

It's a mid tower case that I have had for a while, it's plain Jane but seems to work pretty well!

Water cooling or massive air is the way to go.
A good case can last thru several upgrades....

I love the top easy dock for HHDs, and the dust screens.
I added 2 200mm color shift fans I had to buy from Tt, and a "Y" connector to the colorshift control.

Exhaust;...I have two of them, 200mm color shift, exhausting off the top, heat rises.Plus the stock 140 upper insde back.

Intake;... one on the side blowing into and below my 660GTX and one on the lower up front (both 200mm color shift), plus a smaller 120 mounted on the bottom as an intake Just blue led on that one.
