Have played about 20 SP missions in IL2 so far, am generally enjoying it, and am nearly done with second chapter. (I die a lot - usually collide with ground, target or trees! Still getting the hang of ground attack again after too much time in Hurricanes and Spitfires...)
I have not once had to worry about enemy fighters. Always, when we approach the target, the escorts outnumber the defending fighters about 2-1, and they are quickly destroyed. As Russian developers I am sure they like seeing the odds in their favour, but seems hardly historical to be able to attack Pitomnik and Gumrak and outnumber Luftwaffe defenders every time. Makes for kind of boring missions when you only ever have to worry about ground fire, because the odds are usually 8-2 (so far have not seen more than 2 109s at a target, never seen 190s in the campaign).
On the way to or from base, enemy fighters always seem to go for my escort, not my IL2s,
On the most recent mission I was overjoyed when a group of 109Gs ran across our path, while our escort was out of position about 2km behind us. 'Yes!' I thought. Some evasion and dogfighting at last! Nope, the 109Gs went straight over the top of us, and engaged the escort!
Bummer. I've read bomber SP mission reports where the bombers get attacked, but I guess some AI tuning is needed to make the AI fighters prioritise attacking the player's ground attack aircraft.
So, is anyone playing a VVS ground pounding campaign and have you:
- seen a different balance between VVS escorts and Luftwaffe defenders?
- ever been attacked by enemy fighters, yourself?
- ever had missions with more than 16 aircraft in the furball or is that the technical limit?
Just want to know if the challenge increases greatly, or will it stay more or less the same.
I guess I shouldn't expect much different from this post:
http://forum.il2stur...ughts-about-it/ But it would be nice, just once in a while, to have to worry about enemy aircraft! Otherwise, it is not a very scary war.
