Thar she blows!
Looks like this could be a good one.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Rechecked, and yes, it is significantly overhyped.
The whale approached the ship while the whaleboats were out hunting other whales. One of the whaleboat crews was still on board as their boat had been stoved in an earlier incident (most boats had been damaged or lost at that point ~ a factor that added to the hardship of the crew post-sinking).
The first sighting of the bull-whale was at around 100m, and it leisurely approached and struck in the beam. While it lay stunned, the boatsteerer on board the Essex contemplated harpooning the whale, but decided against it as the flukes were "dangerously close to the rudder".
The crew was occupied with manning the pumps (against suspected but at that time unconfirmed flooding), when the whale which had recovered and moved away turned again to attack head on. This time the attack was fast, and serious. The Essex, travelling at 3 kts, was stopped dead in the water in the impact, and then driven backwards with water coming over the transom. The whale had come in slightly off-centre and struck the hull, rather than the stem, which is a much more massive timber.
Immediately the water level reached over the lower decks, and the Essex began to go down by the head.
The whale departed, the Essex rolled to her beam ends, still essentially intact... and the crew began to work to save themselves.
Their first action was to cut away the masts, shrouds and standing rigging, which permitted the Essex to recover to a 45 degree list, after which they cut through the deck planking to recover hard-tack, freshwater and other stores. They couldn't carry all that could have been recovered, and had to leave some of the freshwater barrels behind. Soon after the ship finally foundered and the boats recovered a few swimming Galapagos Tortoises ('walking meat-stock') and hogs, before leaving the scene.
The *real* drama is the journey in open boats, making land-fall and then the decision to stay or leave...
Personally - I think the *real* story is "sexy enough" and the actionising is unneeded.

We need more seafaring movies, this ought to be good. This is why all whales should be hunted and eaten! Good excuse to play through Dishonored again! That whole world runs on whale oil. LOL

Ya gotta love people. They're killing the whales, the whales are defending themselves...and the whales are the demons! Lol! Arrrr! But I love me a good seafaring story, me maties. Might go see it.
