Back in my hey day, I used to upgrade every two hardware cycles. Last time I upgraded, I went to a Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz (forgot what specific processor), 8 GB DDR, and quad SLI 295s, all water cooler with two radiators. It even has an ancient Creative labs audio card I bought in 2003. It was even heavily leaked on in a catastrophic failure when I was water cooling quad 7950s. Just cleaned it off and it was right as rain. Klipsch Ultra 5.1 speakers. This has been my gaming system every since 2009(?), and I am SO HAPPY with it! It runs every game I want to play at maximum settings, and sounds great. I know I can't play games in DX11, but I haven't seen any that looks different than the DX10 version. Replaced some weird case in 2012 with the Asus black special edition case. Burned out 3 of those BS double decker 295s. The third one just burned out (most likely due to a popped water block that seaped on it, but it never really worked right anyway), replacing it with a single board Tuesday (bought water block and card for less than $125 on eBay, after selling an iPhone 4 for $125, so virtually a zero cost upgrade). Point is -I used to be up on tech, now it has passed me by, and I don't care one bit. Maybe it's getting older, or not having enough time to game how I used to. Maybe at this point in time, technology has so surpassed software that I've been riding the wave these past 4 years. But I am still incredibly happy with this outdated system. I know I'll have to upgrade soon, but my next windfall of cash will be going to a new rifle. Maybe I'll make a new system in 2015, maybe not. What I do know is that the crusty CL audio card will be going in it. I have to keep the lineage flowing.
EDIT -LoL, I just saw my specs in my signature

I kinda know how you feel, only in my case it applies to the CPU. I'm still running an OC'd i7 920 d0 from 2009.
I run triple screens tho, so I still upgrade the vid card every now and then... And I finally dumped my Creative Audigy 2 ZS when the mic jack died on it. Got a PCIe Sound Blaster ZxR.

Argon V,
You might want to look into a Xeon X5650 6-core socket 1366 CPU. It used to be a $1000 CPU, but the going rate on ebay is ~ $70. I got one recently and it is fun to play with. Overclocked to ~3.7 GHz with only a slight bump in voltage. A lot of people overclocked theirs beyond 4 GHz.

There are 2 main routes to having a nice gaming rig: 1)Overbuild so you can live with it for years, but shell out big bucks to do so. Eventually you live through a decline. 2)Build a nice rig, but more reasonable cost and upgrade every so often. Saves money, you don't see the decline much, but never see the uber-ultra high end either. You have to keep up with things more and know when to upgrade and sell your current hardware for best effect. Pros and cons to going either way. I like the 2nd route, but that's because the building is part of the hobby for me, it isn't a chore. Gaming alone isn't enough, I like hardware.

Nice. RK, I used to go the 1st route and over build. Probably still will, just not as often as I used to. It seems lately I have way too much stuff to do, that gaming has been pushed down the priority list. Just a little

When I swapped my mobo and cpu last time I had to call in with the code to get activated. It was the 2nd mobo and 2nd cpu on that product key though. Did a reinstall after a drive died and had to call again. They don't care, but adds a little hassle.

You guys are just getting old, that's all. "Gave up chasing the carrot." It happens. Gave up chasing tail too, didn't you? It happens to all of us, bro. I'm old too. I'm in the same bucket, but I'm determined to upgrade one last time with one last awesome, rockin', kick-ass gaming PC that will take me into my Social Security and Medicare years. LOL. "Gave up chasing the carrot." LOL. You're getting old, man. Old man. Admit it.
