so we´re trying to make videos and flights with not so experienced pilots without voice-coms (ww1) with a coop rather then PvP focus (albeit always present) in a realistic way while having easy fun and not taking things overtly serious.. and still having some sort of campaign.

Mr. Dukley has made the first episodes (with dead zebras..) were basically both our starting characters die:

Episode one:

Episode two:

Updates on the current pilots
Dietrich Crueger (dukley)
Markus Ostkurs (me)
Thorsten Testpilot (Jimmi Blonde)

are to follow...

as well as bloopers:
failed pushing-back-engineless-plane-thingy

AAR: Ostkurs sortie #13
Big bad bombers circeling are over the aerdrome. An emergengency power climb to intercept is in order!
But unfortunatly, the clumsy mechanic has spilled his XXL-coffee over the seat of the brand spanking new Fokker d7f of Crueger, and the cushions are soaking wet. Crueger in return refuses to fight the civilzed englishman with what would appear to be soiled pants. "Thats not how we got to war!" he says, and climbs in his old, outdated pfalz.
Both planes climb skywards, as they see one of the bombers explode, shot down by a lone wulf ace of Jg1 (maushake) but as the enemy then fearfully retreats over the lines, Ostkurs seperates from the flight by slamming the throttle forward.. he catches a bomber over the lines furiously shooting, kills both rearward gunners and damages the engine enough for Crueger to catch up. Wasting all his ammo in the process.
Crueger never shows up.. the bomber flies low into the own AAA proteced allied airspace. Was Crueger composing a new Sonata? He takes german propaganda effort aimed at winning the neutral US hearts and minds through "Kultur" very seriously and appears to be convinced that this is more important then the death of some unimportant british bombers..

after the flight is re-joined over the lines, a collison occurs and Cruegers prop splinters while destroying half of Ostkurs his Fokkers elevator. Ostkurs tries to push Crueger over the lines, thinking of the sonata that must not fall into enemy hands. And breaks his prop in the process. Both planes retire to the countryside to think of an excuse on what to write in the official report.

AAR: Ostkurs sortie #14
http://www.stats.syndicatesquadron.org/sortie/392944/

the squadrons ineptitdue in regard to its abilities for POSITIVE air combat results...... and especially the failure to intercept the bomberformation that took a calm, hourlong evenig-approach to destroy the sectional headquaters "special use" depot has left some tensions between squadron and comand.

Though, clearly, the bombing of said depot is a german victory, as far as the squadron is concerned..

Ostkurs argumentation, that the fact, that it was falsely identified as beeing relevant to the war effort and thus the effort and material wasted by the enemy to destroy irrelevant tropical smoking goods, silk stockings and some exotic booze was a de-facto victory for the airforce inteligence is not widely shared in the higher circles.

In the heated, alkohol fueled dinner at the cheauteu, thoughtless angry remarks by some on how "the whole squadron should be transfered to night bombing, if they just weren´t too dumb to takeoff in a heavy plane" hurt Ostkurses pride.

Drunk and angry, he heads imiatly back to the aerodrome and looks through the leftovers of the recon-squadron that was housed here, before the transfer. Finding some leftover robust and heavy looking ammunitions, Ostkurs asks for the liasion twoseater to be loaded to its brim. Including Fat Alberto, the cook of the enlisted men in the second seat.
While Alberto at first has dificulties in accepting his new found patriotism and volunteering to go over the front, to gloriously represent the working non combat folks in this new art of warfare, a drawn pistol, 2 bottles of Schnaps and the promise to not transfer him to the frontline, finally bring flame to his enthusiasm.

Roaring into the sunset, the flight is long, slow climbing and uneventfull. Even Alberto gets cheerful by the absence of enemy planes and mildly cold evening air. Three targets are attacked in a row, moving on a northbound course against the wind through the enemy sector. Despite carful aiming and observed impacts, the absence of explosions and fire puzzle Ostkurs, but well, "splash damage" is probably extensive and thus this gets filed in the oficial report.

It is not until days later, that inteligence reports on secret erratic paint marks on trains, stations and anti aircraft trucks. Why and how those are grouped together and why it is bright orange draws considerable discussions among the inteligence community and.
Only by accident that in a dark corner of a bar, it is that Ostkurs learns of the creativity of the former reccon squadrons armament technican who had invented paint marker bombs for the training and transition to a new more combat oriented role of the twosweaters, which wasn´t apreciated fully by his superiors. Under the mutual promise of silence, an agreement is reached and technican Hans Mahler is recruited into the "duck" squadrons technical department.

retro-AAR: #2 Cruegers first and Ostkurses second sortie:

because of programation issues, the cruegers-perspective vids are behind the writen AARs. So here is Ostkurses perspective on the first joint mission also the overall first for Ostkurs and Crueger:

Cruegers perspective:

Ostkurses perspective:
Quote:

Was made flight leader in Briefing. Surprise. probably because I shot that one lone, damaged triplane down. Felt flattered. Until realisation that the other 2 guys are probably then even worse than I am.

Crueger, the famed pianist is ordered to be my wingman. I am flattered again, that is a story for the kids if I´ll ever have some. Doubts settle in. Is Crueger as good in airplanes as he is on the piano? He has broken 3 planes in training, some men shouldn´t better be sent to the fontline.

on engine warm up, the inteligence officer comes and tells me: "RFC 5 "the duckhunters" have just mounted a 6 ship patrol." great. why me? Am I not to young to die?

took off and assembled flight. fears confirmed, several near misses during formation flight.

Reached patrol area over the lines. Tried yelling at my wingmen. did not work.

Attacked by a lone triplane. At least not RFC 5.
Brave, ace or stupid? No time to find out, I´ll got luck hits on its engine. The other new guy instantly gets target fixated and attached to the cripled triplane, both spiral deeper and deeper. I don´t want fame, I want to live. Isn´t my engine running rough? Yes it is! I stay up and see Crueger. Signal: "squadron return" given.

engine gives me more and more trouble. I dive back to aerodrome.
Made it, almost. The hole in the ground, where the baldachin over cruegers piano was fastened to large poles, almost flip me over. "Fliegerdenkmal" they call that stance.

My plane broken, Crueger back early from his first mission and the new guy, whose name I can´t rememeber is missing. Glorius. Sector HQ reports plane wreckage of a Triplane and of an albatros over on our side of the lines. I guess I do not need to learn the new guys name anymore.

AAR: Ostkurs, sortie #15
http://www.stats.syndicatesquadron.org/sortie/392978/

a simple front 2 ship front patrol.. which has become routine by now.
The excitment of the new is gone, the fear stays.
Teamed up with Peter von Wald, another nobleman turned aviatior, the trusty old albatri take to the skies.
After not beeing able to intercept a fast Re8, the flight is attacked by Hanriots HD-1s from the belgian airservice.

Both Peter and Markus are able to shoot one down, the one Ostkurs claimed right infront of the german trenches.. with Ostkurs right on its trail hoping to capture man and machine most unharmed.. But, alas, it bursts into flames on the ground.

Meanwhile, while the enemies flightleader glides homeward over their side of the lines with shot out engine.. damaged by Peter von Wald.

But in both cases, the claim is disputed and not given by the kaisers statistical department. "Unconfirmed by army means unconfirmed, you have the deep satisfaction of knowing you have served the fatherland..." is all the comander has to say.

AAR: Ostkurs Sortie #16
http://www.stats.syndicatesquadron.org/sortie/393210/

albeit almost forgotten, the pertubations with high command resurface again: Ostkurs is ordered to visit the old prussian long range night bombing squadron to get first hand experience in precision flight. And in the "future" of warfare, as the order states.

Unfortunatly though, the travel to the back-aerodrome is fraught with danger in dark. Right after the enroute stop in pub to ask for directions, Ostkurs drives into an unlit telephone-pole, neglectivly positioned too close to the road. "Frenchmen!" he curses... they have no feel for technical standards.
Upon finally arriving, the paperwork and formulars take up so much time, that the plane is only beeing embarked upon the rise of a beautiful morning sun. With the squadron allready half on its way to the british "Hauptgegner" ostkurs takes a quick familiarisation flight and flies a brand new gotha against the beautiful backdrop of the rising sun over the lines. Able to avoid all enemies and dumping the bombs wildly into the beautiful landscape, this daring daylight raid becomes an uneventfull leasure flight. Only one unagressive spad is observed before the borowed plane and crew are returned with a flawless landing.

AAR: Ostkurs Sort #17
-Ostkurs failed to return-
http://www.stats.syndicatesquadron.org/sortie/393409/

correspondence:

Dear Mrs Ostkurs,
having having been transfered to the bombers, your son Michael Ostkurs heroically gave his life for the fatherland. The imperial high comand has nothing but praise for this extraordinary pilot and soldier who was always an inspiration and example of military diszipline to friend and foe alike. In these hard times, we all got to give and only the best give all.

That beeing said, we ask you to burn all his letters, that may still be enroute, without reading so military secrets will be protected and the fame of a hero remains unsoiled.

Signed. (not personally but in representation)
The Oberkommando.

Imperial Inteligence Report -Secret-

Subject: -File closure Project Leapfrog-

Peter DuBois aka Peter von Wald, the alsacian caught spying for the french whom we subsequently turned around into a double agent who was then turned around again by the french and then was working for us again, has been terminated and subsequently project "Leapfrogs" is on hold.

His assignment as double agent to Duck Squadron and back as tripple agent to french Esq. 113 has lead to a tragic error: while meeting his former coworker Ostkurs whilst flying a spad of 113, DuBois got confused with identities and tried to form up with Ostkurs. Upon getting too close with Ostkurs (now with FFA rather then the ducks) the gunner evidently opened fire once he realised the french markings a mere 10m away. Shocked, DuBois drove straight and without evasive action into the DFW claiming the life of all three...

Shall his widow recieve a doubleagents pension, a trippleagents security screening or quadrupleagent-benefits quintuple agents termination, please advise.

overall statistics:

planes shot down: 4 (5 but one kill not recognized, hd-1)
groundkills: 5 (trainstation, AA and train)
wounded: 2x in 17 flights
crash/landing ratio: 4 to 13 (including the death)
Flighttime: ~12 hrs

after the death of Ostkurs, a new member enters the duck squadron:

Name: Ernst von Rammler
Rank: Major
Age: 34
Hometown: Berlin
Biography: The useless and soft son of a rich nobleman doesn´t like to comand or go to war, but coming from a military family with the highest tradtions he sees the advantage of war stories with the ladies.. plus he really doesn´t want to lose his pension by deserting, at least not now while it looks like we´re winning.

first missions, which include a vid episode maybe next week were flown in the Vintage Mission on Syndicate Server:

edit: Dukleys perspective is up, so here it goes:

AAR: von Rammler, Sortie #1 (vid will come out on monday, with dukleys "Crueger" perspective, i think)

http://www.stats.syndicatesquadron.org/sortie/393965/

after flying DFWs with the Fliegerersatzabteilung, Major Rammler is finally transfered to fighters, as it has been his wish. Not because he likes the nimble scoutplanes, but because all newspaper stories of the dashing new heroes of the air seem to find the hard work of the twoseaters as rather dull and unglamourus. Not something to impress Ilse and Katharine with....

transfered to one of the least successful imperial airsquadrons, which at least has a musician among its ranks, von Rammler is put in charge of an escort flight, despite his apperant lack of knowledge in basic air combat tactics.

The four-ship flight takes off on northbound heading to climb to Einsatzhöhe, but formation keeping issues actually prevent the whole flight from arriving in time over the rendevouspoint at Nancy and once they get their, the to-be-escorted big birds are nowhere to be seen....

Sizing the opportunity, von Rammler decides to lead an offensive patrol into the hinterland of the enemy where fighters are least likely to be on prowl, while the air attack phase on nancy is in effect.. Reflecting on the term "offensive patrol", von rammler comes to the conclusion, that indeed this show of force over enemy held territory must feel offensive to the french. But the more important part is the beeing shot at really feels offensive and thus the lack of aircombat for the squadron the "only-to-be-used-internally" term "slightly less offensive patrol" is at least to be considered.

On the way back over the lines, the young hothead in the number slot, which usually falls to enemy attack first, spots a train and all by himself opts for groundattack...
in a real dramatic scene, the four albatri dive through flak, so thick you could walk on, only to attack an ememy train in the nancy railyard, delivering further AAA and ammunition as a response to the heavy bombing german bombing campaign.
The young hotheat with his love for taming weasels falls first to the expert machinegun nests. His nefarious element leader then dives bloodseeking thirsty for revenge onto the emplacement..only to suffer engine damage and an subsequent emergency landing near the nancy whorehouse. Von Rammler can not help but feel a mixture of guilt, suspicion and jealousy...
Meanwhile the famous piano player crueger manages to actually blow up some rolling stock and gives enough of a face saving excuse to bug out. Crueger and von Rammler limp over the lines with damaged planes as just out of nowhere the enemy ace "Richards" from aerial battalion one shows up in his Nieuport in hot pursuit.

In a real dramatic finale, von Rammler runs out of fuel (he had a leak) just as he is facing off with the ace that has latched onto Cruegers crippled machine... but both are able to crashland into the beautiful fields below and escape into the woods as the enemy aces strafes their piles of smoking wreckage, that had been beautiful new albatri before..

Result of the first flight under von Rammlers comand:
4 planes lost
one pilot killed, one captured and two in dire need of underwear change.

one enemy train carriage destroyed. A letter from our captured pilot out the pow-camp in britain suggests that it was transporting the instruments of the Nancy chambre orchester. The only non-military carriage of the whole train. How will Crueger react to this news?

Sortie #6 with Major Rammler:
http://www.stats.syndicatesquadron.org/sortie/394152/

Von Rammler is assigned to balloon protection detail and upon arriving, finds out that his old friend Otto von Knallgas, an officer with the imperial balloon corps, is the assigned artillery spotter.

Beeing new to fighters, Ernst is doing his best to impress his old friend with the nimble new invention that is the aeroplane.. whilst wondering why actually the nimble little thing is there to protect a hopless old gasbag that can´t even move over the front to do precision artillery guidance, nor defend itself...

As luck would have it, no fighters turn up, but flak indicates a pair of highspeed bombers.. and Major Rammler climbs desperatly to meet them. He confronts the wingman, who then runs home damaged and has a prolonged gunbattle with the leader, but alas, a luck shot takes out his engine just as the engine of the DH4 also fails.. both glide back over the lines, with Rammler unable to stop the bomber from gliding towards the own lines.

Rammler then breaks off and lands near the ballon, but the flips his plane in the unprepared terrain.. or maybe was that on purpose? Nobody likes the Pfalzes, which have a tremendously suspicous high landing accident rate.. and everybody instead hopes for them to be replaced by the new Fokkers that are promised by high command.
