If this film direct distribution really works well for Netflix the major theatre chains have a lot to worry about since this new business model completely locks them out.

About freaking time too. I am tired of the whole movie theater model. I would rather watch it at home anyways.

I think it depends on the product. Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are all already producing original content, which so far, has not affected regular movie revenues. I think it is more a direct effect on Network TV and Cable channels than cinema, since these productions have proved to be popular enough that they could be seen as a "loss" for not having them on TV.

Netflix is also planning to have simultaneous releases online and in Cinema:

https://pr.netflix.com/WebClient/getNewsSummary.do?newsId=1631

This is more of a threat, due to the convenience of watching the new movie at home, but it is not exclusive.

But regarding Sandler, at least they will not have made a penny from me if this was on theaters anyway. smile2

I wonder if Sandler's most recent film bombing at the box office was a major impetus to him making this deal with Netflix?

I like the idea.
But I have to say certain movies would not be the same on my home cinema system.
There's nothing like the whole movie theatre big screen experience for big budget sci fi movies.
I tend to go weekdays a few weeks after first release, afternoon show if possible
Less idiots and a couple of times I had the whole theatre to my self.

Heck yeah. No dip$#!% on his cellphone behind me, no worthless parents bringing a noisy 4-yr old to see something that is totally inappropriate and boring for them, I can pause the movie and use my own bathroom, drink my own booze etc...

For movie night at my house, we just pull some comfy armchairs and ottomans up closer to our TV and run the audio thru the stereo. It's dang well good enough.

Although I shun the theatres now,I agree with Marko that some films really need to be seen on the big screen to fully appreciate them. I hate disturbances when I'm trying to concentrate on a film. My ex used to invite her brother over for tea and a film and the pair of them would talk constantly through it and not always
about the film whilst I sat there grinding my teeth.

It's not like his movies need to be seen on a big screen, it would add nothing. It's a smart move for him, but I don't see others doing it, or at least enough to kill the theater industry. I'm a big theater fan, just prefer the large screen experience.

The big budget, big special effects films like the Marvel movies, Star Trek and Star Wars will definitely NOT be leaving the movie theatre chains and going to Netflix.

However, I can easily see a big portion of romantic comedies, horror films and lower budget "artsy" films going to Netflix and leaving the theatre chains.

That will still have a significant impact on the bottom line for the theatre chain operators.

I completely disagree. I dont get anything extra out of the theater considering I have a nice chair at home, a #%&*$# huge TV, an awesome sound system and a bluray player. I would actually argue the opposite and say that my home system is better than the local theaters. Plus I dont have to wear pants and can drink and eat whatever I want.

I think a good HMD would eventually kill theater for the big spectacle movies too, especially if the movies are made with that application in mind {some interactivity etc}.

The whole theater business is a very incestuous affair. The cartel between movie studios and the theater chains may have worked in the past, but between easy internet distribution, an appetite for independent film, and home theater tech becoming better and more affordable each year, the days of the theaters are numbered.

I enjoy the theater experience when I can throw rice and spray the audience with a water bottle.

My last movie theater experiences that I recall:

Rush in Rio
Beyond the Lighted Stage (Rush Documentary)
Rush - Time Machine
[EDIT: Rush - Clockwork Angels]

...and somewhere in there Disney's Cars and Jurassic Park 3D (IMAX).

Yeah, I don't go to the movies much. Netflix? Pffft. I can't even stream 144p YouTube! smile I'll stick with my old-fashion DVDs.

I had no idea these had a theatrical release in the US. They must have been very limited releases.

And I forgot "Clockwork Angels".

They were all one-night showings, for example...

Totally, plus i love taking my kids to the movies..it's the whole night out feel as well..dinner and a movie and popcorn, you just can't get that feeling at home no matter how good your gear is. Luckily we still have a drive in here about twenty minutes away nestled off the highway away from town and suburbia. It is constantly overflowing with nostalgic 50's and 60's era movie nights and the biggest car club in QLD is involved with it so when you pull in and something like The Wanderers is on, the lot is filled with 50's -70's era muscle cars and people dressed like they came off the Grease set..it's cool sh/t biggrin
