I like win7, and my wife has win8 on her laptop and I don't like it.
But for gaming, would there be a good reason to go for win8?

thanks

Performance wise, there are gains in Windows 8. Compatibility with older games, not so much (but it has improved since launch). Also, I keep seeing more driver related issues with Windows 8 than Windows 7 due to the maturity of the drivers, I guess.

The only other thing is that you might get Windows 10 free when released, if you are interested in that.

Personally, none of the pro arguments above would move me to get Windows 8 on a new machine, however.

That's another question: what would you get with win10? Anything been said that would translate to performance for gamers?

I tend to buy a new system about every 5 to 7 years, so I gotta ask.

Gaming wise I've heard nothing about a difference between Win10 and 8.1, seeing as DX11.3 and DX12 are theoretically supposed to be available for 8.1 as well. Should MS reverse that decision, then Win10 would be the only place for DX12.
Win7 apparently stopped with DX11.1 and while MS could put the later ones in they have chosen not to.
