Sometimes I will get a message telling me that DX9 failed to initialize. Sometimes the desktop icons load immediately and sometimes they start out just white and slowly fill in. Sometimes some programs (FRAPS seems to be the worst offender even though I have taken it off the startup menu) will open automatically and sometimes they won't.

Win7 HP
Asus G74SX

Seems to run just fine (FSX would be my main sim) after bootup, but it just seems weird, variability on start up. I hope my fractured description makes sense to you.

If you do, don't run it indiscriminately. Take the time to look up every entry it offers to "clean" to know what it is and if you should allow it to touch it. If you don't know, then don't mess with it.
Its very easy to make things worse.
Use one like CCleaner that allows you to make a backup in case you go too far with it.

Might try uninstalling and reinstalling your graphics card driver too. There are driver cleaners out there, but be careful with those too.

I think sometimes Fraps tries to start up faster than it should, resulting in that DX9 issue. Try setting it to NOT startup with windows and run it manually when you need it.

Well the problem could be somewhere else.. Remember the Desktop Icons rely on RAM so slow load maybe the ram is loading too much at once how many GB do you have of RAM??

Also If on Window 7 or Vista goto Start/Run in the RUN Box type MSCONFIG when that box pops up look in Startup you can remove any unwanted startup programs there..

If you are not understanding what is in the Registry I would NOT recommend going in there and deleting things.. You can make a Backup of your Registry tho to be safe..

Yeah, I hesitate messing with the registry, although I have, on other machines but not this one.

I have 12 GB RAM in this machine. Probably just live the the problem for now. Thanks for the replies.

well still run MSCONFIG and see what is in the startup at least. sometimes a lot of clutter is in there..

You might want to run a repair install.
