Fun read, but...

I get in and crank up. No Take On Helicopters flight model here unfortunately, but I keep reading that some developments are coming for Arma 3 that will introduce some more advanced helicopter dynamics apparently...

Don't get your hopes up too soon. The current flight model on Dev branch is very frustrating and there's lots of stuff modeled incorrectly. I haven't messed with the latest update, but I believe there's still some very wrong aerodynamics still being modeled.

In other news, you can shoot from vehicles!

My hopes are already up smile

There are indeed some very wrong aerodynamics, but BI is working on it. Tunes and tweaks to the FM come with each Dev branch update (which have generally landed every week day). It's clear they're still feeling things out, and I suspect this will continue to evolve over time. They've also just now updated to a new version of RotorLib (a 3rd party library), so there's growing pains to be had.

I won't say it's perfect, but it's a heck of a lot more fun than the stock model already.

In addition, the FM's have been opened up to the community now, so tweaks and feedback can be crowd sourced. It also means the future looks bright for A3 Helo ops, as third party models can feature an AFM. This sets the stage for A3 to become the "Strike Fighters of rotary flight": What it lacks in systems depth, it (potentially) can compensate for with content breadth.

I find it the exact opposite. There's no reason when I flare in a helo I should lose all turns on the head. That's just completely wrong. And if you nose over, it's not like you should stop the rotors. Again, way over-exaggerated. Hopefully they smooth it out, though.

I'm hopeful that they will get it squared away. After all, it isn't like they haven't had good experience working on helo flight models in the past (TOH). And while TOH FMs weren't perfect, they were good enough. Hopefully once everything has settled down, Nodunit and Franze might think about tweaking their AH-64 to work seamlessly with ARMA3.. We'll see..

What is your opinion on the Helo FMs in Arma3 when compared to Arma2 ?

I don't know if the question was directed at me or not..but I have never flown a stock helo in Arma 2 or Arma 3 - so I have no frame of reference. I only recently started playing Arma 2 with the AH-64D mod, and Arma 3 with the rescue helo mod, so I don't have any frame of reference to build on other than comparisons to the Take On Helicopters FM, which is generally superior to Arma 2 or 3 stuff (but not as good as say Black Shark or DCS Huey/Mi-8)..

Thanks Chris. Wasn't quite the answer I am looking for but good to know about TOH, though I have heard there are several outstanding issues with that game.

That AH-64 by Nodunit and Franze is really something isn't it? I didn't think that kind of detail and functionality was even possible with Arma2 but those guys really push the envelope and exceeded it. Helmet cuing system using TrackIR...it's something I always wanted for sims and especially for gunships in Arma2, more so when I fly singleplayer and wanted to slave the 30mm chain gun myself

Helmet mounted sights (slaved to TrackIR) also works in EECH by the way.. thumbsup
