Hi Guys
I know we don't have too many Maltese members here, but just on general terms always good feedback around.
Vienna right now is "Meh". My job is getting more "americanized" - more demand on our engineering teams, unrealistic deadlines, an an investor company basically starting to outsource a lot of stuff to India. I've been single for almost two years now, a lot of decent girls, but not "the one" around. Actually there is "the one" but she got a BF, and while she clearly digs me she's not quite ready to ditch him for me. Friends are getting married, have kids, stay at home. I'm 33 and a bit on the older side for the nightclub lifestyle - whereas daytime Austria hobbies (Mountains, Forrests, Museums) don't really thrill me any more. I'm 33 now, so I don't want to waste another two years.
Malta on the other hand... I've been there five times in six years, and I always loved it. I love the sea, I love the boats, I love the food, there's amazingly beautiful women, lots of cute young tourist girls, and a few easygoing guys. Generally the society seems more open towards new people as Vienna will ever be.
It wouldn't be terribly difficult to quit my job, get my separation pay and live off savings for six months. My viennese apartment I might keep and place a friend to take care meanwhile. I could come back anytime before six months and collect six months unemployment before I need to work again. Or I could find a job in the gambling/betting hosting centres that thrive on Malta (I'm a Datacenter Admin/Network engineer) and stay there.
It all sounds rather exciting. I'm fairly sure a few people here have done similar things. What's your take?

I've a very good German friend in Malta.
Feel like PM to see if he's able to help you out?

You can get unemployment after quitting a job, not getting laid off??? That's some liberal rules right there, getting it over here is like a job unto itself and it doesn't pay crap. Anyway, I'm not the adventurous type, never quit a job without having another lined up, so I'll say in your shoes I'd stay where I was and be miserable long before I would do what you talk of! To me it seems pretty obvious that you are ready for a major paradigm shift. WHOA whoa whoa, jos. Calm down- that's no Star Wars. We've been barely able to get a Quantum Computer figured out...

Panzer, I met two expats (one Austrian just moved down there himself) on the plane as I flew done in August, and another Expat living on a boat there was my host.
Tax is low, cost of living is comparable or less, so according to my countryman if I had enough skill to land a well-paying job in Vienna I will have a similar living standard down there.
Job Market for IT/Network/Datacenter stuff is exploding due to the online casino boom, there are even specific websites for that kind of jobs that I got recommended. Only downside is that they have some restrictions even inside EU, mostly along the lines of foreigners not able to take up jobs where enough local labor is available. Doesn't apply that much to the tech sector.
I'm fairly sure I could also make some kind of living in a more touristy employment, because there's a lot of German speaking tourists down there.
I don't really want to decide on work there immediatly after moving, I guess what I need to find out is if two or three months of the same will still have me as happy as during my vacations. Being in country and connecting with people from the industry it shouldn't be too terrible hard to get into interviews.

Like I said, it would be like a three-month trial, then either to add another three months vacation, or start to look for something more permanent.
Six months away from Vienna might even make me appreciate stuff around here for what it has.
On a sad note, that girl I mentioned above just called me. We're both really, really into each other, but she's still also really, really into her boyfriend and wants to reduce our contact to a minimum in order to not risk any escalation. It's a crazy situation, makes me want to get on an airplane this evening...

Best option seems to be finding a job there, then quit, put that pay away as a nest egg, possibly keep your current place on the side until you decide to commit to Malta. Low risk, no odd gaps on your resume, enjoy the fresh start.

If long term, then yes, I'd be curious about the language.
The thing is, if I take a job there, I'll not be really able to focus on what I actually want. I'm not 100% happy in the tech field, so by going straight to another tech job, it just makes it the same life in a different place. It would also make it hard to get a good start, like, might delay my departure - or force me to leave earlier - than would be good from the weather and climate.

Dude, I am moving to Malta after that spiel If you are confident in your skills and the job market for those in Austria if you do decide to come back I say go for your extended vacation / trial run in Malta.

I haven't mentioned the massively interesting Crusades and WW2 History yet, have I? I'll not have a 100% Guarantee for a new job, obviously, but I can live okay on six months unemployment, and worst case take up half of my parent's house (separate entrances and privacy of course) afterwards to really cut down living costs. An option they might actually appreciate because they would enjoy the help. So there's no realistic way I would end up jobless/totally broke even if the trip goes badly.

Whoa, living on a boat? That was my dream 20 years ago, but the wife put the skids on that. I really wanted a 44' Gulfstar ketch. 'REALLY' wanted. Like dreamed about it for 10 years before I retired. She didn't 'notify' that she would NOT live on a boat, until a few months before I retired. So I made my choice. Go for it sir. Ah, yeah, I'd move if I was you, BEFORE you meet that beautiful woman your dreaming of
