I have a chance to buy this from a local guy new in the box. I did some research and on Amazon the reviews were harsh in saying the boxed game has problems running in win 8 among others and recommend the Steam version. Anyone here have any experience with this game, boxed or Steam?
The Trilogy has all three versions and most are having problems with the first version.

Mass Effect 1 was a console exclusive that was ported to pc later. It had a bunch of problems because of that.

It isn't bad, but no real controller support. If that's ok you probably won't notice anything. IMO the game is better played with a controller though, I couldn't stand it on pc. One of those games simply better off on console IMO.

I played the original ME on the PC in its entirety twice and the only thing that bugged me were the interminably long resource hunts on the planets using the ground vehicle (forgot what it was called).

I played the original ME on the PC in its entirety twice and the only thing that bugged me were the interminably long resource hunts on the planets using the ground vehicle Same here. Bought it on DVD for the PC, and aside from the fact that the UI was clearly designed for console and game controller, and that the resource hunts were just implemented to stretch play time, I had no issues with it. Then again, I wasn't playing this under Win 8. Amazon reviews for games, BluRays and electronic gizmos contain an above-average quota of nerd rage reviews IMO. While some of the critique may be justified, I still see a lot of low ratings for many product because the manufacturer dared to not fulfill a particular and sometimes esoteric pet peeve of the reviewer. So, if Win 8 compatibility is an issue I'd use my favorite search engine and hunt for existing forum threads where people ask for help, and see if there is a recurring theme. Maybe it's as simple as having to install DirectX 9 under Win 8, or some application compatibility setting, or maybe it's a Win 8 issue to begin with. One thing should be clear however, ME1 and 2 came out well before Win 8 was released. I'm not quite sure if the Amazon reviewers expected that with the advent of a new Windows version there should be a compatibility fairy sprinkling pixie dust on the stocks of old game boxes to retro-magically convert them into native Win 8 applications?
