"J" marks the spot ... I think "C" is their backup plan. The logistics involved in this epic 10 year journey seem mind boggling!!! http://sci.esa.int/rosetta/Hopefully they'll have touchdown around November 11th!

You know, it is so easy to get caught up in ISIS, Ebola and melting ice caps, and forget what an amazing time we are all so fortunate to live in. Higgs Boson, Google glass, this. We live in a time where the nerds finally get to be the jocks. And the jocks finally get to be the A$$ES they always were.

Exciting. If you have red/blue 3D glasses, be sure to take a look at the 3D photo of the landing spot. Quite a bit of terrain variety.

Where do we plant the explosives? First we'll need a drill rig, and a drilling rig crew...

That's the difference between having Bruce Willis as your star and Tea Leoni.

The fact that all asteroid threads elicit references to "Armaggedon" instead of "Deep Impact" suggests to me that the former while cheesy is a remembered film while the latter with an arguably better script is a forgotten film. I think part of that might be because "Armageddon" gets mocked so much, making it more famous. I haven't actually seen either, other than a few clips here and there on TV, but I've seen more people making fun of "Armageddon," so that's the one I'm more familiar with.

Full res image (~ 3000x3700 px) here: http://www.esa.int/var/esa/storage/image...2014_NavCam.jpg The comet is estimated to be ~5km wide, so as this image spans two 1920px wide screens, a single screen is about 2.5km wide, and each pixel is about 1.3m wide, but it seems the minimum resolved detail is about 2x2 pixels. So a person standing on the comet in that pic would be just slightly too small to be seen. And those smallest grains you see on the surface are roughly the size of a garage.

It's Beethoven's "Ode to Joy". It may be a bit pompous, but I daresay that it positively doesn't suck. The finale from 1812 Overture would be better. Europe's motto could be "Behave or we'll put on our silly hats and BURN YOUR GOD DAMNED COUNTRY DOWN" http://youtu.be/-BbT0E990IQ?t=13m57sThe silly hat being a Napoleonic era shako of course.

Cool stuff. I wonder how they control the descent. What sort of calculations does it involve to be able to land on a specific spot on a chaotically rotating comet. I'd like to take a look at the source code of such a software... and cry.
