Short story : last week a nerve in my upper arm was badly compressed and I lost motricity partly in my left hand (a partial paralysis, so to speak). Since my job entails typing on a keyboard all day long, right now I'm on forced leave :-/

At first I was thinking, great, a couple weeks of vacations, but hell the loss (even partial) of a hand is crippling - cannot play computer/console games, cannot do any heavy chores around the house, cannot put the free time to any good use, heck, cannot even tie my shoelaces right now. Maddening...

Doctor says it will come back, it's "just" a matter of waiting, but she was awefully vague about what kind of timeframe we are looking at. In the meantime I have a special orthosis fitted tomorrow - with, I kid you not, rubber bands to help the fingers move aound... Hopefully this should help me type at more than 10 chars/minute

Right, going out to buy a Wii right now !

Could be worse : it could have been the RIGHT wrist, in which case I probably couldn't even get dressed

Funnily enough, I can drive my car without any problems, go figure

I had a case flare up years ago that was pretty severe, lasted about 4 months or so. My wrists were swollen up nearly an inch on the back of each hand. It was a struggle to even dress myself. The doctor suspected that the flareup was caused by over-gripping my video game controller during a weekend of heavy play. He recommended salt water baths for the wrist, and sleeping in a wrist brace to minimize over extension and aggravation at night. Something to ask your doctor about.

To this day, I remain careful. I type a lot, and pay vigorous attention to posture, both body, and hand/arm. Nearly triggered another flareup doing some intense FPS play in UT2004 a couple years ago, but avoided anything but a weekend of down time due to the minor pain and swelling. It was my mousing hand, just too tense during play.

Something you can do, is read!

Back in those days I had a grand piano sitting in my bedroom next to my bed, and surprisingly, I was able to play some chord progressions during my down time. The hand posture is of course quite static doing this, mainly just varying the spacing of the fingers and the rest was in the forearm. The doctor OK'ed it since it didn't hurt, made my hand feel better (Doc supposed due to the mild stretching exercise) and it did help pass the time.

Hopefully your case will be over with much sooner! All the best with it!

Happened to me earlier this year, ended up I had to get an operation to free and move the nerve, this was taken in July this year a few weeks after the operation. I still have no feeling in half my hand but it gets better and gets worse, doc told me it could take as long as 4 years for the nerve to heal if it heals at all.

It was for a while, it is itchy now, and still a little tender in places.

The worst thing is not knowing where your fingers are, and you keep catching them on things.
taking vitamin B to help in the repair of the nerve and making sure I put as little pressure on my arm as possible. I'm also using a wrist weight and a stress ball to try and reverse the muscle wastage.

Ouch! From the location of that incision, I assume that nerve runs down the back of your arm where you use the armrest on a deskchair? Was that part of what you guys found caused it?

It was a combination of things all adding up to compression of the ulnar nerve, leaning on a marble desktop, plus a severe infection from a mosquito bite on my elbow and another on my wrist, but probably the worst thing was at night sleeping half sitting up with my head resting on the back of my hand/bent wrist supported on my elbow. That would wake me up in the middle of the night with pins and needles in my hand and pain in my shoulder - thought it was bad circulation but turned out it was a problem with my tummy which shares a nerve in your shoulder, but by then it was too late the damage had been done.

The main thing is keeping your self busy after my accident a few years back
I was pretty badly injured was out of work for over a year a couple of ops metal supports and pins fitted.
Also sleep is very important for the heeling process
My last peace of advice I assume your still mobile so go out don't sit around thinking about it.
Make a list of things you can still do. hopefully you will heel quickly
stress is not good when trying to heel

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.
