Since my one 660ti crapped out I sent it RMA to MSI, who were unable to fix it. As a result they are sending me a 670 - which doesn't workout since I will no longer be able to run SLI. Either way I'll be on one card.

Considering selling one or both, possibly upgrade to the 700 series. Here's the model numbers:
N660Ti TF 3GD5/OC
N670GTX-PM2D2GD5/OC

--------------

On another note - I really need to get back on DCS!

No, it gives you a reason to upgrade the other 660ti to 670.

I would but I don't want two of those running with plain coolers. That's too much heat. The Twin Frozr cooler on my 660ti is superb - found that out after I bought it in place of a 560ti I had before.

I'm starting to dream of a new machine... can I do from scratch a three x 27" monitor machine for max $2200? I bet it would be more like $3000...

So here is a question. When the update comes for a dedicated server, is Doug going to throw one up or will we continue to use Hollo Pointe and Firehouse, or all three?

What's stopping them from running the ded. server app on the normal hollopoint and fire house machines?

Once I finish re-wiring my Coax and Cat6 Lines, I'll have dual Teamed DOCSIS 3.0 Modems with 100mb/sec up on each one smile

So I might do an East Coast Dedi.

Hollo Pointe will continue to host DCS missions. And if anyone wants to request a mission, PM me with the mission, time and date and I'll see about loading it up.

My understanding of a dedicated server is a computer that doesn't need a video card -- it could be a blade server, maybe a virtual server.

My house is all CAT 5. The runs are pretty short, but I do wonder if that restricts 1 GB traffic in any way.

Gigabit will run fine on Cat 5. Cat 5e and Cat 6 have better shielding to reduce crosstalk, which means they are better at handling gigabit over much longer lengths.

If all the runs in your house are less than 50 meters (150 feet) then you are completely fine. Most cables purchased in the last 5 years are CAT 5e anyway.

Besides, if your switch, either the one in your router or a standalone switch, is only 10/100 mb/s then it doesn't matter if you have a gig card in your pc and cat 6 cable anywhere.

And even if you did run everything inside your home to gig speeds everyone connecting to your server would be connecting to you on internet speeds, typically 20 mb/s average, and frequently alot less due to their upload speeds.

If you want to improve the experience, cabling is not the place - get the fastest processor you can for your server,
put a bunch of memory in it, and load the game on an SSD.

Everybody gets everything they want. I wanted a mission. And for my sins..they gave me one.

Cat5 is 100MHz
Cat5e is 100MHz, Supports GigaBit Networking, CrossTalk Improvements
Cat6, is 350MHz, is GigaBit Networking Certified

Running Cat6 in my home benefits everything but the Xbox 360.

All my PCs (Mine, My Brother's, The Backup/Old One, Laptops, etc) all have GigaBIT Network Controllers.
The New Modem/Router Combos' are DOCSIS3.0 Models with Quad Bonded Channels, GigaBit Networking Built in and each of them has a 100MBit Upload Connection to the ISP.
Using Two of them in Teaming Mode on my PC (I have Dual GigaBIT Network Controllers), Doubles my bandwidth capability.

What just bugs the heck out of me with my home network is watching streaming HD TV & movies.

My wireless router is a new ASUS RT-N66U. About a month ago I got a microwave Internet connection that is ~10 MBps Up and Down. All my switches are 10/100/1GB. The signal off the microwave antenna is coax wired to the ASUS, and that is CAT 5 wired to the main (Samsung Smart) TV through one switch - the overall cable length can't be more than 50'.

But when we watch Amazon Prime TV and movies on my TV, maybe once or twice an hour the picture will stop for 2-3 minutes. If I try to stream an HD movie from DirecTV a message will come up that says the Internet speed isn't sufficient to watch it, would I like to watch the Standard version?

What do I need to do? My wireless provider guy thinks the microwave connection that I have should be fine.

The Samsung TV has wireless, maybe I should try that...

If your TV has a wired connection I would leave that. Wireless would be worse. Or at least less reliable.

I would suspect the microwave up and down speed. Run speed tests in a browser at the movie watching times. Compare over several nights.

I have never been impressed with the Amazon prime service. I have 30 mb/s down using Comcast cable and I get some buffering. I don't have any experience with Direct TV.

WC, I'd say to start with measuring what you are actually getting for throughput on your connection... do it at the same time(s) of day that you would typically want to stream video. There are a number of 'speed test' web sites on the web that you could use.

I don't know diddly about your circumstances and options. Do you have other providers available to choose from? Does your current provider offer any other options on higher bandwidth connections? Does your provider offer any guarantees on your throughput? How big of an issue/consideration is cost?

Be aware, your wireless provider could be testing your microwave link and getting top numbers on it and saying the link is fine, while your effective throughput ends up being something less due to a choke point higher up in the network. Providers have to aggregate multiple connections at some point in their network, and if the upstream bandwidth isn't high enough to handle the combined load you have a bottleneck in the effective data flow. It's an economic balancing act that service providers have to manage. That's why I recommend doing the testing yourself and during the times that you would be most concerned about throughput. Your service provider's combined load is going to be different at different times, and that may be limiting the throughput to you during times of higher peak combined loads.

Are you providing and managing your own router, or is it supplied/managed by your service provider? If it is under your control, you may take a look at its capabilities, and see if it will let you prioritize certain types of traffic. Of course, if you find a way to give your video streaming higher priority, it might adversely affect your DCS server...

Maybe this w/e I will run the speed test off of the switch up by the TV, and compare it to the speed at the new ASUS modem. Ummm, I'll try running the speed test while we watch a movie.

Have you seen the new Ron Perlman 'Hand Of God' pilot?

---

Another thread has a comment about picking up IGLAs (MANPADS) with a Huey. I have a mission called Bridge At Zugdidi that has cargo pickups for Hueys, but I heard that got borked in a recent update. But, the cargo was bringing Stingers forward, so if a Stinger team can be picked up instead then that's really what I want to do.
