Could you have a "soft" receiver re heat treated? I doubt it. Not sure you could do it without ruining the receiver in the process. I still have my eye out for a later model Springfield or Rock Island 03. Anything after 300,000 is supposedly safe to shoot. An A1 would be a good option as well. I'd love an A4 but I don't want to sell a kidney to get it it. Between that and Mausers I can't get enough of these old bolt action rifles.

Yeah, there is something special about the bolts. I'm nearing the end on a rebuild of an old bolt right now. Took one of the Yugoslav since they have the shorter action than the Mauser k98 and I wanted to change to 308. Rebarreled it with a very heavy bull barrel in 308 and got a Boyd thumbhole stock. I am doing some stain testing to see how they come out. Wanted to stay light, but the unfinished wood from Boyd's is medium and every stain is coming a bit darker than I had in mind. Seems the winner is going to be Golden Oak with a poly finish. Already have the receiver tapped and picatinney rail on it. I've worked the stock trigger as good as I can, and I will know when I range shoot it whether I am going to ditch it for a custom match setup. Going to have to drop some money on a scope.

That will be my next surplus rifle. If I ever find one that I can afford. A Garand and a P-17 then I'll stop. Really I will I promise. Well maybe those two and a K-98 Mauser then I'll be satisfied. Well those three and maybe a ..............

All I want is a 7/8 scale Lewis gun that shoots blanks (the FAA wouldn't care if I had one that fired rounds, but the ATF would be a different matter)!
Kinda funny on the gun front here. As y'all know, I got rid of my Glock 22 in favor of an Auto Ordinance 1911 for no reason other than I prefer a 1911 out of familiarity. Well, a couple months ago the office called and said I had to bring in my S&W .38 revolver and swap it out.
Yep, they issued me a Glock 22. It's a fine pistol and made qualification simple; if one is missing with a Glock on a standard pistol range, it's not the Glock (so long as one uses both hands on it - I found the G22 a poor fit for offhand shooting).
Now I kinda miss that old police revolver, though. Reliable as it gets, and a decent shooter.
My M1 Carbine needs some work, too. It's a Plainsfield, which means the machining work was done largely by High School kids, and the rear sight mount was cut too large; the darn sight assembly floats left and right! Since it's solidly non-collectable I'm thinking of just putting some JB Weld in there to lock it down.

I found that not only do Glocks feel strange to me but if I don't deliberately and very carefully aim my shoots go high left every time for me. This is with the17 and 21. These are the only ones I've tried. The newer ones might be fine for all I know. I have two Springfield Armory guns chambered in 45acp A Range Officer 1911 and a XDm 5.25 that are almost like an extension of my arm. No searching for the front sight and no pulled shots. You are not likely to conceal carry ether of these but that's not what I got them for.

I like to poorly conceal carry, with some "printing" of the firearm visible. Bear in mind that when I carry there's normally a very specific reason for it, and my first desire is to put out a big rattlesnake vibe.
But here in Alabaster one can open carry so when I need to carry a pistol I just strap it on and go.

We have legal OC and no printing laws in WI, so I just throw a shirt over it and if the wind decides to blow up my skirt and someone sees I won't lose sleep over it.
1911s are pretty nice for carrying not because they're small overall but because they're really thin.

Here are a couple pictures of my project. Sanded raw stock. You can see that there is still some of the poly finish that remains from my tests. Raw stock with parts. The proverbial lock, stock, and barrel. Now sanded, stained and first re-sand. Used the Golden Oak, but as I said the natural dark color of the wood does tallow much color change. Also, the light was poor and the tones don't show well. Test with poly showed that it will look different than the stained look as it now shows. Will do the first poly tomorrow.

I have a Rimfire Hunter stock coming from Boyd's for my Marlin 917V. This rifle came from Marlin with about the ugliest hardwood stock imaginable but it didn't cost an arm and a leg, shoots decently and .17 HMR is easy to find.

Sort of wish I had a .17 right now. Can find that ammo everywhere. At least .223 is now back on the shelves after missing for so long. I got my savage mk 2 only about 5 months back. Had no idea .22 was in short supply. Never would have thought. Had a mess of .22 before I got the savage. HMMM not now. between it, my Ruger Mk2 .22 government model and my buddys .22 savage we ate all my .22 stock pile over the summer. But I want to give my old marlin 60ss a face lift with a boyds rimfire hunter. On my to do list. As well as throwing some DIP parts on it. Used both those on the savage and major thumbs up. How is the rimfire hunter as a stock...well once you get it? Right now in no hurry since I can not find any .22 around here. But if it ends up being better than all the weird marlin .22 stocks how can it be worse?
