Thanks for posting these. Even if I don't get to watch right away I save them in a playlist. Its unfortunate how many great shorts there are but rarely a good scifi full length movie.

You are welcome Raw Kryptonite! Great to know that some of you do enjoy these short Sci-Fi films. I do agree with your assessment with full length "Hollywood" Sci-Fi films and reason to that (generally speaking) is that Hollywood films are part of a business machine. If you understand that then it is no surprise as to why those films generally are not good. With the short Sci-fi films that I showcase here are usually created by enthusiasts of the genre who devote their efforts, time and even their own money to do such projects. That is why I enjoy sharing them with you here so the true Science Fiction stories are seen by all fans!

Also, don't forget that it is generally easier to write a good short story than a good novel. This applies to films and TV as well. A TV series with only 10 eps a season is going to have better stories than one that had 26. Quality trumps quantity.
A 15 min film is literally 1/8 the length of a feature, so you don't need to pad out your main story or add subplots to make it the right length.

Both THX and Jedi are spot on with their assessments.

Additionally, these scifi short films on the net are made specifically to cater to a niche audience. Full length Hollywood productions must by virtue of their production costs appeal to a wider audience.

I agree with points brought up by Panzer and Jedi. Saying that we have the unicorns from Hollywood to the likes of:

2001
Alien
Brazil
Blade Runner
Moon

So it can be done if a group of individuals in California decide to do so. If I would be some head honcho in Hollywood I would make a law to "force" them to create an "artistic" (open to writers and directors to do what they dream/feel) film for every 5 money-making-junk block buster film. Something like the big USA TV networks have to do with providing "content" for x amount of junk they transmit via electromagnetic waves!

For 2014, my hope is on (I may be proven wrong):

Interstellar
Automata
Zero Theorem

I'm feeling pretty good about "Interstellar". I know trailers can be misleading but Chris Nolan hasn't disappointed me yet.

I would have thought that the purpose of these projects,
which aren't cheap, and involve a lot of volunteered time,
would be as a demo, a production credit, promoting the
participants as competent craftsmen, and perhaps supporting
the main creators' bid for funding for a full commercial
project. Sort of, do what you really like, and have fun,
while creating a resum item to further your career.

Eh, only ONE of those was made in this century. That one was very low budget (it hid it well) so it didn't need to appeal to a large market.

Last big budget artsy films I can think of were Cloud Atlas (bomb!) and Life of Pi.

And the only reason why "Cloud Atlas" got even made was because the Wachowski's funded it themselves.
