Hi everyone,
I've recently Had to ditch Windows XP 32bit for Windows 7 64bit; I used to dual boot but my new Video card won't work with XP 32bit. Now I can't install Jane's WWII fighters on Win 7. The disc spins up and I get the Install splash screen but when I try to install, the computer thinks for a few seconds and the splash screen disappears. Not really a crash, Just seems to ignore the setup. I combed the net with no luck. I thought someone here could help. Thank.

Has been some time that i did it, but you can either install it in XP modus (right-click - properties a.s.o.), or you use the free-to-download runtime XP-mode, or Virtual PC (both work with Win 7 64 bit)

First you could try this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/open-the-program-compatibility-troubleshooter

For virtual machines look here (formerly, virtual pc was only to be used with a Win7 professional or higher version, but i think i heard it now works for all):

XP mode: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

Both (scroll down): http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8247-windows-xp-mode-install-setup.html

I don't think it's worth the effort with Virtual PC for this as it doesn't support 3D accelleration, unless Jane's WW2 Fighters can be run in software mode (I haven't got the game).

Thanks Priceyplanecrasher and Catfish,

I've read about Virtual PC not supporting 3D. I'll follow the other suggestions from Catfish and post the results tomorrow.

I've always loved that game and not ready to give it up.

I may try a manual install with a no-cd crack. It's worth a try.

Thanks again.

Just thought I would mention that I have been able to run WWII fighters on my W7 64-bit machine. I don't really remember having to jump through to many hoops to get it going. I do a lot of retro gaming and I'm used to having to do all kinds of wacky stuff to get old games running...I just don't remember having issues with WWII fighters.

I just recently wiped my hard drive so I might give a go at re-installing and let you know. (if time permits...been working crazy hours)

So i went ahead and tried it...here are the results:

As you can see it seems to go pretty smooth with no compatibility settings checked....just loaded up the CD and went through the set up. Get's to the main menu just fine without applying any patches yet. So I would say to check your CD out for damage and make sure you have done all the Windows updates. Might as well make sure DirectX is up to snuff...possibly the Microsoft Visual C++ stuff as well.

Good Luck!

Hi Folks,
Sorry it took a little while to get back to all of you.

I started with Catfish's http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/open-the-program-compatibility-troubleshooter, which turns out to be just a way for windows to hold your hand while you switch compatibility modes and it can't do that if the program is not installed. I did try compatibility mode with every OS for the setup.exe; No luck. I re-booted and was going to copy the cd files to HDD and try a manual install but I tried inserting the CD once more and clicked Install; It worked!!!. I patched the game and everything works perfect.
Thanks so much for the trouble. I still don't know what happened but it doesn't matter now. I'm happy!

Force10,
You're right about the DX stuff. I had already taken care of that knowing that in the past some older games have given me a fit even though I had the latest DX installed (Had to install the ver. that the game wanted).
JFYI, You do need the patch for force feedback.

Thanks Again.

WWII Fighters was probably the flightsim I had the most genuine fun with. And the WWII Fighter site had a great bunch of guys there.

Hands down the best game intro to any flightsim.
