Hey guys first off I gotta say I'm loving this game atm. I've come from playing rise of flight but my internet is simply shocking and while ROF does have offline play the ai leaves a lot to be desired. However offline play on WOFF is simply fantastic!!

Now to my question, i was just wondering what the majority of u guys use, do u use standard res skins so you can see the bullet holes or do you use high res skins while playing? I'm trying to weigh up my options, the high res skins are very nice but occasionally its nice to have a visual cue that I've been hit, which happens a whole lot in this game for me haha. So what is your opinion?

High res skins or Standard Res skins
single choice

I go high resolution skins since I like to see nice looking planes. And yeah WOFF really grabs at you and drags you into the great war huh?

Wanna get super immersed?lately I have been turning off stuff little by little to see if I like the game with them off.First it was the in game map and since I navigate with Lou's maps I turned it off and never looked back, though with bombers you may have to as its hard to know what to target in no mans land as enemy and friendlies look the same on ground. Then it was removing labels for icons and with just dots its a major improvement. Then I removed the F4 wonder woman view.Tonight I went and turned off time compression and find I like that also LOL.Now I am forced to fly real time since the keys just don't work anymore.I cant seem to get rid of flyby view though. Its just too sweet to view the planes like that.Call me strange! biggrin

Welcome over Flanders fields, Mukai!

High res skins here - the visuals are important to me.

As for the hits: you'll hear it when you get hit; Creaghorn has made a great little series
of different sounds for the impacts on wood, metal or canvas - very alarming!
And you will see the serious damage anyway, like big areas of ripped off canvas, or missing wing
tips. Only the "decals" for bulletholes are missing.
It wouldn't help you much counting those in an attack - you'd get shot while trying to.

I always use Standart res. For me it is beautiful enough, but I also want to see bulletholes if I receive any. It is quite cool to see them, especially after landing when you see where you got hit, how many inches from your cockpit sometimes etc.

On a similar note, I may be wrong, but I'd assume that canvas wouldn't show holes but small rips and tears which wouldn't be visible anyway (or very hard to notice while flying) considering the caliber of the machine guns used wasn't too large @ 7.xx mm.

Metal and Wood holes would probably be visible, however.

I go high-res. I like the bullet holes but they are too large and holes arranged in a straight line is a bit too Hollywood. For me it's not worth a lesser quality overall skin.

Exactly. I was very curious about the feature, but just didn't like the way holes look.

It probably will take a hit, Mukai92
You'll also become very good at creating pilot names.

High resolution skins for me. I look at planes when not in combat, that is, 95% of the time, I don´t have time to look at the holes in the canvas once things get hot, ...

is the bullet hole 'graphic' something that could be modded to a small rip or tear look? just curious...

I use the standard-res skins. As already said, they look very good on my computer and I like seeing some bullet marks when I get hit.

I am sure it is something that could be done easily enough...if you have the skill,,
If it's just a graphic file it should be real easy. If it also involves a .mdl type file along with it then it may be real tricky.

With all that said I am a standard skin guy - +1 to what Creaghorn said.

To my understanding from poking around, the bullet holes are a separate "skin" that is transparent except for the holes or damage and seems to be applied over the normal skin in parts as you are damaged. If you look in the aircraft folders, you can find the damage texture for each craft. It shows up as a white skin (transparent in game) with all the possible damage and bullet holes on it. You could proabably mod this like any other texture and see what results you get. Maybe someone with 3D skin application know-how can chime in as to how the thing all works. (I'd like to know myself!)

The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...

Those textures are bitmaps with alpha channel embedded, I find these kind of textures very time consuming when editing. But, yes, definitely can be easily modified (one by one for each aircraft and variation!).

I'm a standard res guy. I like counting the bullet holes when I get back from a mission, even if they aren't the most realistic.

I returned from one mission with my Alb. V so shot up, it looked like Swiss Cheese!

I did a simple trick in Photoshop to show people what bullet holes look like in an Albatros V. Those pink zones are the ones that could be modified to "enhance" the visual damage.
