Hi,

I'm planning my first switch panel to use with the DCS Huey. I've looked at circuit boards from Desktop Aviator and Bodnar, and I've kind of defaulted to the Bodnar BBI-32, since DA is closed until the 21st.

The Huey's Rocket Pair Selection switch is a rotary that goes from 0 to 7. It uses a keypress to go up and another to go down, but doesn't have separate keyboard commands for each position of the dial. From what I've read I think I could use a rotary encoder to do this, but I'm not clear on the wiring or programming to accomplish this. Most of the rotary encoders I see on Ebay have five wiring connectors-how would these interface with the Bodnar board? Also, how do you program this switch? Will DCS see it as multiple button presses? I see BBI-32 software on the Bodnar site-is this used to program the board and would I use it for this application?

I also see rotary switches like this one on Ebay. Is it possible on a switch like this to input one key command while turning one direction and input a different key command while turning the opposite direction? I'm guessing not.

Sorry for all of the question-any help would be greatly appreciated!

A encoder typically use three wires

One common and two for button clockwise and counter-clockwise.

These that have two extra is for "press the knob" switch.

Games see game controllers like Windows see on Control Panel, in this case o BU0836 + encoders,
turning encoder left one button is pressed, e.g 1, turning right other, e.g. 2.

You can use this "rotary switch" as encoder, wire in this way:

Other possibility is use "pulse switch", see there, in "manual trim".

Thanks for the reply.

I've done some electrical stuff to my truck but I'm not well versed on electrical work. If I'm understanding what you're saying, a rotary encoder, hooked up to two of the button positions on the Bodnar board with the ground hooked up to one of the positions, will input repeated commands when turned one way and a different command when turned the other way, as seen in Windows as an HID device. Is that correct? If so, That should work for my application.

Yes, it's what Encoder do.
