Guys.

Has anyone tried EAW on one to see if it would run?

I am not surprised that this is the first reply smile

I checked a few things at this site:

Tablet PCs

This is a screenie of the initial page:

All seem to be running some version of Windows 8.
When I installed an early version EAW ran on it, but there was a serious framerate problem. I went back to Windows 7. Since then I hear that things have improved- Shogun was running EAW on Windows 8.
So the operating system may be OK for EAW.

My biggest concern is that to fly EAW you normally need at least a joystick, a keyboard and a mouse.
From the looks of things not many have a keyboard, and several USB sockets would be needed for the externals.
An on-screen keyboard would be useless for playing EAW.

My final concern is that like many modern devices you are expected to download and purchase software, because they do not have CD drives. With enough USB sockets a version of EAW could be installed on one using an external drive. However, it is likely to be a long time before anyone tries frown

Hi Tony.

I have 3 tablets but they all run Android OS, but all the system specs are better than what 1.2 ran on. I just wondered if it was possible to run EAW on one of these new machines. The way telephones are going, maybe EAW will run on a Windows phone? eek

As long as the tablet is x86 based and runs Win8.1 it should work fine. While I can't find my EAW disk, I'm running its contemporaries (TAW,F4, etc) on a first generation Surface Pro without any problem despite its Intel HD4000 graphics.
I use a 7-way powered USB hub (about a fiver from Amazon) for keyboard/Mouse/joystick/DVD drive/memory stick etc
The tablet has a DisplayPort which means a big TV can be used as a display.

I may never buy a big box computer again....

As for running it on an ARM based tablet (it's probably ARM if it only runs Android), you're going to have to recompile it for that platform.
Not easy, but at least you've got access to the source code. I just hope it doesn't rely too much on MFC.

I just had a very promising report from Mike. He has installed 1.40 and got it working.
Mike hit what looks like a serious problem, but it is because my "eaw.ini" file was included in the set-up.
I get exactly the same result that he described when I switch between the laptop and desktop PC but forget to plug the joystick in.
I just did a test on my laptop with no joystick after renaming my "eaw.ini" file.
This forced the exe to write a new one, and when I flew the problem he described did not occur.
I had to read the "eaw.ini" file to remind myself which keys to press, but I was then able to fly OK.

Yes, I didn't have a joystick plugged in when I did that test.

I'll try again later with MrJelly's workaround.

Do you think, for tablets, we shoulf make a slimmed down package, with just a revised default setup, and drop all the extra skin sets, and content?

Finally got around to running EAW again on the MS Surface (Win8.1)....and it works fine. I could probably get better graphics with a Glide wrapper though.
The only 'problem' is that the videos play like a slideshow.

In fact, it's better than on on my main Win7 desktop (NV GTX590), where the videos are totally black and the colours on the menu screens are corrupt. It's OK in the 3D world though.
Well, except that I somehow stalled the engine and got into an unrecoverable spin. I don't remember it being that sensitive. smile

Just out of interest right now I am installing the Windows 10 beta on my desktop PC to see what it is like and if it runs EAW.
Fingers crossed
