We've come a long way from Tipperary, it seems.
Just saw this memorial video from the late nineties "RED BARON 3D", and I guess
it must have been just GRAND and exiting. The detail is all just lovely and well made,
and I would be VERY upset about having missed it completely back in those days,
if "Wings Over Flanders Fields" was not the great successor it is.
All those who have flown it, may indulge in sweet memories now.
Me, I missed it, but will climb into my cockpit and fly within the world of WOFF now -
which shall be my sweet memories in 15 years... pilot

I wonder what vision the guy uses partly - looks almost as fluid as TrackIR...

Oh man, I had the luck to be there in the perfect spot in the perfect time to be playing this masterpiece. And yes, WOFF is a very VERY good successor to it. Thanks for the dejavu Olham, RB3D was GRAND, WOFF is....GRANDER? wink

Boy that brings back a lot of memories. Played this right out the gate when it came out in....'92 or '93?
I spent many an hour flying RB3D and all the "super packs"; IIRC the term for the mods.

How old are you Olham? Can't believe you never played RB3D.

In regards to the fluid movement, and this is going by memory, at the end TrackIR was made to work and I believe the "mouse look" was always an option.

S!

That is a very indiscreet question, Sir! biggrin
Well, it is not a matter of age, but rather of bad publicity. I had read in some
gamer magazine, that "Red Baron" wasn't too good. Maybe that was an earlier stage
before the "3D" was added? However - it didn't sell too well in Germany.
At hindsight one of the bigger mistakes in my life, I know.

RB3D was amazing and simply the best WW1 sim for many years. You could mod it and even TrackIR support was added eventually.

RBII was originally released in 1997 and it was a buggy mess. I suppose that is the version that received bad publicity in Germany? But when they released the 3D patch next year, it changed everything.

Yeah, I guess the bad reviews were on the "buggy mess".
I still remember how "RB 3D" was on those big "sell-out tables" for 9,90 DM -
and I didn't grab it. Shows how much publicity can do - good or bad...

I feel sorry for you, Olham! You really did miss a wonderful experience back then.

In some ways, RB3D is still better than WOFF. Squadron ops were more advanced and you could freely adjust things like waypoints, if you had a high enough rank.

Well, you can lead your flight any other way than the given waypoints, when you are the leader.
But of course we can't set them new in the preflight map. Something for the 'wish list'...

Yes, the version before the "3D" release had issues (though I still played it). Don't recall being too buggy and I believe the main impetus was the "3D" to take advantage of the "modern and powerful" video cards then coming out.
In fact the "3D" version was quickly released after the original to fix things IIRC.
1997? My memory is poor. Thought it was earlier than that.

The German WIKIPEDIA site is more detailed about the game.
It was released in 1997, and the "3D" version one year later.

Even though each WW1 sim has its strengths and weaknesses and I like them all for different reasons, I still feel that RB3D, RoF and First Eagles have some cool features that I wish were in WOFF.

I like the signature of LukeFF from RoF which reads "Enjoy the game for what it is, not what you would like it to be. --Tom Cofield"

This has also been kinda like a hidden message for OFF/WOFF for a long time as well. I'd like to see some wish list requests finally make their way into WOFF, but it took forever and a day to get WOFF this far. Can WOFF get better eventually? Sure, it probably will, I hope sooner rather than later.... but I'll try to keep reminding myself.... "patience young grasshopper --Master Po".....

In fact some of our very own Dev's cut their teeth on RB3D.

OvS had his very own "super patch" (mod) IIRC.

And hopefully WOFF will continue to develop the final polish to make it THE WW1 aerial sim.
It already is in my book but I certainly wouldn't mind some features and tweaks.

Spent many a day playing RB3D. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. "Full Canvas Pattch'" was an add on which improved the graphics tremendously. Flew the wings off it until the puter went and could not find anything to run it. Then OFF came to the rescue. Now I have WOFF and I am a happy camper!

Did also add countless flight hours on my log with this one ! yep Iirc the "3D" referred to the Glide Api technology of the new 3Dfx Voodoo graphic cards.

Wow that brought back some memories! The one thing that sticks out is how well done the menus are. From RB3d to now there was almost nothing out that even tried to reach what they did with the atmosphere pieces. Considering how old it is now I was kind of impressed by how it looked. I spent an insane amount of time playing that online back in the day. Still remember that you had to quickly kill your pilot if you caught fire as it would crash the server. smile

FYI they are attempting a remake, but I don't think it got off to a great start. They did a kickstarter that failed to meet it's goal. I read that they were still going to move forward, but I'm sure that put a big dent into the project. frown

WOFF is the closest thing that has come to RB3D in terms of immersion for me. I still think it's a hair behind, but that's limits of the system they are building it on I believe. The best part of the video? The sound of the guy jumping out of the plane. That always cracked me up when I played it.

Not only did the reboot Kickstarter fail, but it also looked like a completely arcade version of the old classic flight sim.

Ya it looks like they are trying to straddle the middle on that. I really wouldn't mind that if they have a very good campaign as I have WOFF for realism. I have a feeling this will never be completed, but Dynamix was easily my favorite company back in the day so I'll at least keep an eye on it to see if anything ever happens.

That was my first computer "game". I purchased a PC in early 2000 for our family, mainly my daughter. Didn't think much of the PC until I took her shopping for something she needed for it and saw the big RB3D box on a shelf.

Three months later I was buying another PC for me and a vodoo video card.
