Very cool!
Small error in the report, though: their L-bird has to be restored, as even though it was never registered in the USA it was type certified by the factory; while they could theoretically go for an exhibition certification, that carries such restrictions that it might as well have a rope tied to one wing and the other the field's windsock.
So to make it truly airworthy they have to bring it back to official configuration as laid out by the type certification, applying AD's as they go. I suspect the latter is the real PITA, as one has to decide to bring it to original and then make the change or go for the changed state from the start - both have pro's and con's, and the process isn't always as straight forward as one thinks. Factor in STC's that allow for alterations and it becomes a real noodle on how to proceed.
In fact I'd rather build from scratch than restore an existing aircraft, as it's much easier to make something right the first time than tear down and repair to the original configuration.
