Is anyone here into this? My buddy has a couple of basic angling kayaks and we've been out a few times lately. Not a lot of luck fishing, just too late and hot when we got out, but I loved the kayak! I've been looking them up and checking out some videos and its amazing what people do in these things. The kayaks are pretty stable due to the hull design, so they don't roll over easily like river kayaks. Still need to lash things down or tether, just in case, but once you get used to it you see how stable it is. These were a sit on top design some of which you can stand up on too. They can get outfitted almost like a bass boat, some even have a modular drop-in trolling motor, fish finders, live wells etc. Probably won't get one until Feb (bday) since I've got to also figure out transporting, but there are always basic roof racks for cars as a last resort. Also want to get one with a raised seat rather than just something molded in. Some pretty good ones start at $550 but go up to over $2000.
People even take these out pretty far for saltwater fishing. Check this out:
Oh, fishing from a kayak. I thought it would be stupid easy to catch kayakers with a well-timed cast. I mean, they don't call it boat fishing when you take a boat.
Seems like a bizarre pairing, though. No one goes bicycle deer hunting or pogo hiking. You have so little room to pack the stuff you take, unless you're taking a real short trip. Where do you keep your bait, gear, drinks, snacks, bathroom, sonar, radar, radios, stove, TV...

No, she could have gone, but it would have cost us too much in travel and hotels for her to run just a handful of races. She starts college next year and that's where the money goes. She raced here in Quebec competitions several times this summer and she did well. She really enjoys it.
Spent the summers at Rideau while in my teens. Had some national success in C boats.

Bait? Good lord man. For those that fish like that, there are live wells that look like coolers you can put in, usually behind your seat. Nicer ones have storage in the floor in front of your seat to stow tackle organizer cases. Some have some under the seat and to the sides. Cupholders are there, you can add some to the sides. They have 3-4 rod holders already. Cooler can go out front. There's more water tight storage in the hull up front, if not even more places. Usually a small water proof storage place near the seat for cell phone/keys etc. Fish/depth finder would mount on the rail.

That's pretty cool. There are inflatable kayaks as well. Would definitely eliminate the transportation issue. That and a CO2 tank would just about go in the Miata. Or at least on it. What I liked about the kayak was how easy it was to paddle. Hardly any effort compared to the jon boat I used to have.
If you go wandering the coast in a kayak, for a month or so, fishing is really a major source of food, as you can't fit much food in a kayak. You take the cooking hardware and the condiments, and live off what you catch. And you never fish with your feet in the water, you have the spray skirt clipped on around the seat well to keep waves from swamping the compartment, which is used for extra storage beyond what fits in the holds, and besides, you need to keep your legs dry so the water doesn't suck all the heat out of your body. (Unless of course you're in a sheltered bay in a dead calm in the height of summer, but that hardly counts.)

I think that kayak would be a little more than $500-1200. I'd love to have a center console boat like that one day though.
Around here, keeping warm isn't the issue, but cooling off is. Don't think I'd want a sit-in kayak. Still not putting my feet in the water though, lots of gators here.

Kayaks are great for bass fishing on lakes and ponds. More stable than canoes and able to get into the weeds. No way I'd go deep sea fishing in one though. That's just me.
I think there is more stuff on that kayak than my boat. I do a lot of fishing too (going out tomorrow morning) and really enjoy it.
I started out kayaking. Anything that gets you out on the water is good. The sea here is usually too rough to go far, though. When the tide is running the crab pot markers get pulled under by the current and paddling would be hard going. That can be planned for, of course but most kayak fishers stay inside the estuary here.
Chucking all your gear in the car and heading off with friends is definitely a good way to go.

1. That is MAYBE a 125 lb Marlin
2. I wouldn't want to be in the Sea of Cortez with a bleeding fish on in anything less than a twin engine 25' outboard.
3. AWESOME catch....but if they keep it up THEY are gonna get caught.
Then there's this rocket scientist.
Coulda been a 10' Bull Shark or Sand Tiger instead of that little puppy Lemon (?) Shark. Real smart of him yanking on the leader and putting his mouth right next to him.
He needs to fix his Bass-O-Matic and go back to some lake somewhere.
