Yup, that spoof was great. Will Ferrell was perfect.

MTV died for me about the time they started doing their own movie awards. Remote Control...Freedom Rock commercials...Liquid Television...The Young Ones reruns. Oh, and music videos of all things! That was MTV.

I didn't get cable until 1986 but when I finally got it I was absolutely addicted to MTV. Pretty much any music video that came out between 1986 and 1994 I remember very well.

I'm not sure why rap would be to blame; that is just a matter of musical taste. The reality TV craze on the other hand actually changed the programming from music videos to a different format.
At least rap opened a whole other option of music videos that in marketing terms helped to extend the life of music videos as a viable product.
Reality TV shows displaced music videos and thus their viability as a marketable product on MTV, thus relegating music videos to a lesser marketing status.

Some of you forget that one of the flagship shows of MTV during the 80's and early 90's was "Yo MTV Raps".

Run DMC was on in 1986 and LL Cool J in '87. Yo! MTV Raps was from '88 to '95
Interesting fact, the MTV News used Megadeths 'Peace Sells' bass line intro as it's intro but only played enough of it so they didn't have to pay royalties
