I don't know.. material is too weak - one child can destroy it in several hours, large dog - much faster =)
also - if I am understand correctly only one "common" model is planned, but usually gamers like to have some concrete aircraft's pit. for me it sounds like good present for 10 yo boy, nothing more.

Miguel Angel González Domingo: Thanks a lot Miguel! You are first owner of our cockpit. We planning to do also WW2 , at least one of the most popular. We'll see about helicopters, but will include it to our survey.
I appreciate very much your support!

If the thing was designed to be cut from 1/4" cardboard, you could CNC your own set using his PDF and 1/4" plywood. That would be kinda neat.

GADGET, can you find out what thickness of cardboard he's planning on using?

Hi Guys,
I was about to post this by myself but see that GADGET already did it. Thanks a lot for support GADGET.
Actually i am creator of that cardboard cockpit and got two kids, still nothing happend after one year of their using as playhouse :), I also playing in this cockpit a lot and its still stable, joystick, throttle and pedals are still. It is from 4 mm corrugated cardboard and constructed to be solid. I already have prepared version for cut, with more flaps to cover all exposed edges and get even more stability without using glue. I also changed construction of central console and now you can go under joystick with your armchair, so you have it exactly on right place. If you want i can send you short video with me playing.

X-wing and rest of models are there just to illustrate that i want to create another types and i am not against any aircraft if will be popular.
Sure i want to do classic warbird, its also my wish to do it. There will be survey and every backer can vote for his favorite.

Plywood is good, but its way more expensive, worst manipulation, tweaking and you cannot print so nice textures on it. And if you buy some gauges, you need saw to cut holes, here you just take sharp knife. I don't think you want to jump on it smile. Also for early backers there is PDF version ,so if something break, you just print it again.

If you have any questions, hit me smile i will answer everything i can.

With that many ribs, it would seem that if you used material stronger than cardboard it could be a substantial pit. Would 1/4 plywood be the only option? There's a dark brown material like melamine or pressboard (not sure of the name) that isn't as dense as MDF and can bend just a little before it breaks.

Material costs could rise quickly with so many parts, even with less expensive 1/4 or 3/16 material. The CNC costs here locally are quite high. I got a quote a few years ago on just the cutting for a simpit that I think came from the DCS forums and it was over $300. SWMBO was not amused. wink

I wish him luck and hope to see more updates, however. New ideas tend to breed other new ideas.

I like it! Corrugated cardboard is surprisingly strong. Maybe also do a sticker version. People who really want a mdf or even a fiberboard version can stick the prints on local bought material. And then go mental for some hours with a jigsaw!!

Lukas,
I like it, looks sturdy enough for me and because you can print textures it gives a nice effect. Nice one.

If he were to make the slots 6.35mm wide, you could make it from a cheap grade of 1/4" plywood and then skin the structure using the printed cardboard sheets.

Excellent job though.

I'm hoping that one day we have effective hand tracking to combine with things like an Oculus Rift. Then you could have something like this cockpit, relatively cheaply made, that just had the right dimensions of the cockpit you're interested in (wouldn't even have to be painted or decals or anything). If you could see your hands moving, and everything you touched was really physically there, imagine how immersive that could seem. Going a bit further, you could even put some switches and levers in there (not necessarily electrically connected to anything), and the hand tracking software would just figure out which controls you were operating and how.

Even without the hand tracking, and just the Oculus Rift, such a thing would be pretty cool.

But, aside from all that, I think this is a brilliant idea.

Sadly I have a force controlled cougar, with my "fly casual" pilot style i would rip the thing apart.
But i really like it especially the kid version since i am about to start the flight lesson for my daughter when she turns 3. you could also sell the plans only for what i saw on the Kick starter price list the proces are not that unreasonable (i know that free plans kills competition) also you could do a cardboard plywood hybrid usiong plywood only in the structures that are more stressed.
