Came across an unexpected windfall and am computer shopping.
I have always had Nvidia cards for my systems but several new towers I have been looking at have Radeon cards which, when taken as a whole system, seem (still need to compare CPU's) to be offering greater speed (according to the video card benchmarks) for the same money. This will be my WOFF machine.
I don't really have any complaints with Nvidia. I have always used them and am familiar with them but am not afraid to switch to get more "bang for the buck."

Anybody have any strong feelings either way about the two main card companies?

I am using Radeon, but the Shadow Play feature on the high end Nvideia cards might be worth considering as folks who have them say the video captures are less intensive on the FPS use.

I am using Radeon with 'Eyefinity' and 3 screens. Dunno if Nvidia has the same feature.

If you want to be future-proof, you'll need something with 4GB.

So, if money is not an issue, then go with a superclocked 780 Ti 4GB version. Otherwise, get a 290X 4GB or something with 4GB. You can look here for a graphics card hierarchy.

I just got a new PC this month. Went with the Radeon R9 290X (4GB GPU) based upon the suggestion of another flight simmer. I've been pleased.

One of the systems I was looking at has the 2 GB version of your card and it rated quite high on the benchmark list.
Clearly many here use Radeon so no WOFF problems are anticipated.

Unfortunately OldHat money is an issue but this system will just have to last me about three years. Or I can upgrade to a 4 GB card down the road.

Guess I won't be afraid to take the Radeon plunge once I look at the CPU benchmarks. On it's face, model number wise, the Radeon system also has the faster CPU so I will check the benchmark scores.
Guess I have to wonder why the Nvidia system is the same price? Unless comparable Nvidia cards are just more pricey.

I cannot compare, as I always had ATI RADEON cards so far.
My HD 7870 is doing a fine job. But in OFF-times they said, OFF looked even better on NVIDIA cards.
I guess I'm not helping...

My thinking is go for a 2 gig card if your wallet allows. Also check on the price of such cards at online stores. Maybe the cost of a new rig with a lower scoring card and a seperately purchased high end card can be bought for less than a new rig with a mediocre card.

I have used ATI cards for over ten years and have currently moved to the Nvidia 780 Ti (the dark side) this year. I went with the Nvidia card for two reasons, 1. it is faster than any ATI single card (CFS3 does not use dual cards) and 2. it has far greater video settings (with Nvidia Inspector) than ATI cards.

With the Nvidia Inspector software, you can get about 4 times the number of 3D setting that you can get in the ATI CC software.

Visually I do not notice much difference between the ATI game machine and Nvidia game machine except for the ability to tweak the Nvidia PC much more than the ATI PC.

That's a thought but I did not think the R290 2 GB was a mediocre card. At least if I picked it out correctly on the benchmark list... it was quite high up there but I can check again. But it was 0300 in the morning when I looked.

May be a matter of perspective also. This system will be head and shoulders above my current one least hardware wise. And a 64-bit operating system (Win 7) for WOFF.

Shadowplay is a really cool feature. Unless ATI comes up with something similar, I don't think I will even consider their cards, especially for something like WOFF, where the shared experiences enrich an already great sim.

Wish my flying and shooting was that good that I would wish others to see it!

Ok. Did the final side by side with my two finalists.

#1 - Intel Core i7 4770 (3.4 GHZ) with benchmark score of 9930
With GTX 760 Ti benchmarked at 4681

#2 - Intel Core i7 4790 (3.6 GH) with benchmark score of 10213
With AMD Radeon R9-270 benchmarked at 4224

Everything else with the two systems is equal in regards to the rest of the hardware, RAM, etc.

At this point I am thinking I will go with #1 since the CPU scores are basically the same with only the GPUs showing a significant difference. If anyone was curious....

As stated by Rick, I have to agree that even if all else were equal, the Shadowplay feature is a must have option. Even if you don't record and push stuff up to the web on a regular basis, once in awhile you're going to have that mind blowing mission that you want to be able to watch again and again. With Shadowplay running, it's just a keystroke away to record and save it. It's even already highly compressed in file size compared to, say, FRAPS.

Also, I'm sure Radeons are wonderful cards, but I've been an Nvidia guy for a long time now and never regretted a purchase.

Over the years for a dozen or so video cards I used Nvidia, and around 3 times I changed to ATI when they had something special out, and always went back to NVidia as I had less issues but each to his own.

Yes you can run games across 3 monitors with the Nvidia cards, their control panel has something called "Surround" - worked very well when I tried it.

Assuming that you have the option to replace the video cards, you're building this for WOFF and you are using a 1080 monitor, then your CPU can go down to an i5. Save that money (or spend a bit extra if you can) and get a 770 which has better performance than a 760.

Otherwise, you can go for a 280X or 7970 ATI cards. Also, you'll get better performance.

These are pre-built systems that I am getting a great deal on as a friend works for the company.

If you do go with #1, make sure to download Nvidia Inspector to give yourself more 3D options.

I have a 1 x nvidia Asus Titan 6gig and 2 x AMD R9 290x in another PC. I prefer Nvidia graphic cards.

Well the new system is on the way. Can't wait to see WOFF in all its glory.

They threw in a 32 GB SSD drive as a bonus but I am wondering what to do with it.

My WOFF install clocks in at 33 GB already so that idea is out.

Yes, I have my page file on a different drive than my OS, so it's not that difficult.
