The things you can find in the internet...
Translated, the writing on this two-seater means: "Don't shoot - good people!"

Does anyone know, which plane this is?

A Brisfit. Understandable why they painted it like that. smile

.

Brisfit A7231 to be precise and it was the property of Jasta 5. It became their hack and they eventually painted it like this because simply slapping crosses over the roundels did not deter German troops from firing on it.

Amazing. All new to me. The photo was taken from a height possibly 35-45 deg angle. possibly from roof top?

Nice find!

Ah, so even the details of that particular Brisfit are known. Interesting! Never seen it before myself.

Infantrymen of WW1 liked to shoot at aircraft. Especially in the early war it seems to have been common to shoot at anything that flew, no matter what kind of emblems were painted on it. For example in 1914-15 the Austro-Hungarian army fordid their infantry from shooting at *any* aircraft, because all attempts to make the men distinguish between friendly and enemy planes had failed. The British also had problems with their early emblems getting confused with the German crosses.

elephant, if I remember correctly there were several Rumplers in service during the war with that legend painted on the sides. Could be wrong though, the memory is not what it used to be.

It seems the Germans had some sort of rule about being photographed with hats on. I was looking through some of my WWII collection of books and noticed that all the Lufwaffe pilots (Mölders, Galland, Barkhorn, Hartmann et al) were always wearing hats in photographs whereas the Brits often were photographed with bare heads. Just something I noticed.....

Of course I will be deluged now with photos of German pilots without hats biggrin

I've noticed the same thing Jim, German pilots were always rockin' the cap look.

Of course Manfred pulled off the 'sans cap' look, (the man could do no wrong in the eyes of German HQ you know).

Totally off-topic, (but then we are already), anyone else ever notice how much David Hyde Pierce looks like MvR?

Long lost relative? Me thinks perhaps yes.

No hats allowed indoors unless specifically ordered to wear them! At least that was the rule when I was in the army, and a lot of those rules were old and originally from the Prussians that trained the core of our army in the early days of independence. smile

However, the German aviators seem to have been allowed certain liberties, like taking the stiffening wires out of their caps to give them a crushed look. U-boat officers also did that.

Pierce could well be MvR in his forties in that photo! Maybe somebody could photoshop him wearing a Luftwaffe uniform from the 1930s and we'd see how MvR would have looked like if he had lived past that fateful April 1918. smile

When I was in the army, we had to wear our uniform caps outdoors - always.
Without them, the uniform was not regarded as 'complete'.

Just like in the US military, except in English.

The Biff in the top post was photographed at Jasta 5's airfield at Boistrancourt. Photo taken from the roof of Hangar 5 or the tall ladder seen in lineup photos of their Albs.

German pilots were never photographed without caps? "Always" is such a dangerous word... wink An awful lot of pilots were photographed without caps, beyond MvR:

That's what I found in one minute.

Well done, JFM. Inundate them with evidence!

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.
