Flying a campaign in March 1917 with Jasta 11 as a Flieger.
While my mates flit about in Alb DIII (Early) I have been assigned that aerial pig known as the Halb DII.
My boys flaunt their speed and often leave me behind on patrols, etc.

Went to the three .txt files that are controlling this campaign and one is in plain English and the other two are in some programming language (hexadecimal?)

Changed the Halb assignment in the plain text file but on starting the campaign back up I am still in the pig.
Anyone have a cheat or know of a program that will read the two other campaign files?
Apparently I need to change something in them to make a plane switch.

Unless you can interpret those Hex files, I think your toast!

Isn't there some freeware program that can read and edit these files?
I like toast but not when flying in combat!

Much easier, Duke - make a "manual enlistment" (bottom right corner)
and enter service as a Leutnant - then you'll receive an Albatros.
You can click in that enlistment menue, and switch through all units
and through years, months or even days, to see when a unit has which aircraft.

The Halberstadt by the way is not bad - in summer 1916 that is.
It can beat the Airco DH.2.
In March 1917 it is of course obsolete.

If you still want to try and edit those files all you need is a hex editor. I'm sure you can find a free one on the internet.

Ok thanks...will go a-searching.

And thanks Olham. I always do Manual Enlistment and like to start at a low rank and work my way up.
Got to draw the line with the "flying pig" though!

I might be able to tough it out if my flight didn't leave me....maybe for 1.27?
A fix for dissimilar planes in the same formation having to fly at the same speed, I.e., the speed of the slowest plane in the flight?

You could go to workshops Duke and choose "always lead". Your mates will have to follow you and fly your speed. You could also take off with 50% fuel (or as light as you can go) and leave them with 100% thereby lightening your load.

Good Lord.
I guess I was thinking that I open it up in an hex editor, see a plain language conversion, make changes, then re save as a hex document - if, in fact, the are hexadecimal files.

They look to be but I tried 3 different hex editor programs and could get no recognizable english words out of any of them and I did a lot of button clicking.
Even watched some video tutorials and the english words popped up just fine for them on their demo files so I am left wondering EXACTLY what kind of files these are.
Assuming I knew what I was doing of course!

Think I'll restart the campaign as a Lieutenant unless some has some (easy) insight here.

Why do you want to change the historical realities, Duke?
If you came to a new unit, and you had a low rank, then they gave you the lowest plane they had.
And you would have had to make do with it.
Fly more modest and defensive, until you receive a better crate?

And that I am left flying the patrol solo or occasionally with the other poor Flieger because we can't keep up.

And don't tell me next its my "poor flying skills". The other Flieger in the Halb gets left behind also. Geesh.

Perhaps things do not translate as intended as text lacks inflection.

Yes. I read the book by K.F.Kurt Jentsch, and he had that problem.
He was "only" a Feldwebel and received the last old rotten Albatros D.II, when he arrived
at his new Staffel at the Western Front. The other flyers in their D.III or even D.V
climbed away from him, and he tried to follow them, more than 500 Meter lower.

But I can understand your suffering, and that you are trying to find a work-around.

500 meters away from your formation is not the same as "out of sight and 10 miles away" but I will await an OBD fix.

In the interim I will re-start as a Lieutenant. Did I mention my uncle is a Baron?

I haven't had a look at these "Hex-Files" yet, but I guess these are "just" Settings for Variables. One could easily alter them... if one would know what these individual Numbers do. If there are no Comments in the File or somewhere, the only way to get behind that would be to contact the Devs...
in some Programs you need to alter more than one file, because some Games automatically create a backup file somewhere and will rather read this than your newly changed file (I don't know if WOFF does this)

If I knew exactly what type of files they are it may make things easier and comments may show if present.
I claim no expertise with hexadecimal!

My initial thought of what a "hex editor" program does was quite in error.

Hehe... While my mother and her side of the family are from Germany I am afraid I was joking about the nobility part.
It was a subtle attempt at humor to explain why I deserve a better plane and a promotion to Lieutenant
