http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=32861Canon is single shot, heavy damage. Multi-canon is like a gattling gun. Multi-cannons have a slight gimbal effect (fixed) when you got the mark in your sights, Cannons do not.

I like the cannon myself over the multicannon, but it probably depends upon the scenario and personal taste. You put your energy weapons on primary fire for shields, and keep the cannon on secondary fire for hull (or group them in a similar fashion). An important strategic element to keep in mind is that ships tend to cut and run once their shields go down, so that could be a benefit to a gimbaled multicannon where you need to put as many shots on target in the time you have. My attitude with the cannon is that I'll be firing my beam weapons, and still be in close enough contact the moment their shields drop and right at that moment I want to hit them as hard as possible with projectiles. If the damage per second is the same between a gimballed multicannon and landing all your hits with the cannon, the multicannon is probably better. I'm not aware of any up to date listing of weapon damage statistics, which would be a useful thing to have.
Definitely something to keep in mind is that you can't use both a cannon and an energy weapon at the same time because you have to lead your target with the projectile weapons (gimbals can come in here, of course, and I have limited experience with gimballed weapons).
I'm not speaking from great experience with any of this though, so just food for thought.

have just found out that turreted weapons can be a bit of a pain ... they seem to auto track hostile targets, now this may seem a good thing .. it is util you wing-man (sorry Fudge) clips you with a shot when you are both dog-fighting the same target .. then your turret sees your wing-man as hostile and lights him up

Dont think of it as being vastly outnumbered ... but just having a large target selection.
The only thing more accurate than incoming fire, is incoming friendly fire
Tracers work BOTH ways...

I don't like the cannons/multi-cannons as they seemed to do hardly any damage to hulls and that was with 2 C4 Multi-cannons. I now have 2 C3 PL's and 2 C2 Missile Racks. The point defences are worth there weight in gold, they stop every missile from getting through. Not so good when my target has one and I fire missiles though
