I knew the Manfred-von-Richthofen-Strasse in Berlin-Tempelhof, west of the Tempelhof aerodrome;
and that there was also a street named after Boelcke.
But only today I checked the area closer and discovered several more streets with aviators'names.
I missed many men, who would have deserved to be honoured like this, like Berthold, or Josef Mai.
Others I didn't even know.
Maybe the names selection was done by "Herr Meier" in the 30s or 40s?
That would explain, why Ernst Udet only received a small dead end street.

I see there is a place called 'Burger King'. Did he get the 'Pour le Merite'? Or maybe the 'Pour les pommes frites'?

I used to think assignment of street names was some magical thing done by city councils or some lofty administrator. Then I started working for an engineer designing subdivisions and I found out how it is really done. wink

Go to any USAF air base, and you'll find a ton of streets named after US aviators.

Scullin a NW suburb of Canberra, Australia has named many of their streets after famous Australian aviators including Alec "Bob" Little and Roderick Dallas.

US Army posts are the same way, though sometimes they will throw in famous battles.

I know that all victorious nations did this, and still do.
what I did NOT know was, that the Germans had named so many streets after their WW1 flyers -
and that these street names were never changed after the Nazi Reich had fallen.

I'm hoping to get my Street named after our next door neighbour.

But I suspect that Noisyf*****g-useless fat burger munching twat Road...might be a bit long?
