Curious though why nobody tried this with an RC aircraft with a drop/release servo.

Interesting.
But we beat them by about 20 years.

Back when I was into R/C aircraft, my brother and I used to make R/C aircraft that actually used an extra servo to open a bombay door and drop items, also they had fake bombs on the wings you could just add.
We also made small 6" rockets, with small rocket engines, then stuck them on a wire, on the wings, and used another servo to activate the fuse, they fly off the wing and with a little explosive device (black powder) in the nose of the rocket, instead of the stock parachute, it would explode. We'd dog fight, and try to hit each other. Nobody ever actually connected, but it was fun. That was back in 1990.

I have some photos in the album. Still have the plane in the garage rafters. The batteries on the R/C controller went dead after all these years, but I'm sure I could get them replaced.

Yeah, the good old days. Now it's all virtual, and on my PC.
But it never crossed my mind that someone would try to drop contraband, into a prison yard.... rolleyes

They used a RC Helicopter to try to smuggle drugs in to a prison here in Ireland a few weeks ago.
There going to have to place radio jammers around prisons.

I like the

It is believed to be the first time the high-tech approach has been taken to smuggle contraband into a South Carolina prison.

All it means is someone finally was caught doing it.

Look for me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Tic Toc...or anywhere you may frequent, besides SimHq, on the Global Scam Net. Aka, the internet.
I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.

I suggest some skeet shooting practice for the guards.
