Just got this link sent to me by my old boss, who is also a retired Army Ranger;

This website link might be of interest to you . . . this is what is being archived at Ft. Belvoir outside of Washington, DC.
Here you go:

Army Storage

BTW, one of the examples; the Tom Lee 1000 Yard Stare painting, has for many years, been my mental image of the quintessential results of really serious combat… life and death experienced… and survived.

That is one serious collection yep Shame that the general public can't see it until that museum gets built.

"behind a series of highly alarmed doors"
LOL
Sorry, that just struck me as funny. What freaked them out?

I think I first saw that joke on a Benny Hill ep back in the day.

Sign on a door that says "Door is alarmed", pan down to a handwritten sign tacked on below that says "what startled it?"

That was absolutely fascinating. I never knew that such a place existed. Thanks.

I understand that building a suitable museum takes a huge amount of money... but what about a website with a virtual representation of all the pieces?

Doesn't take much anymore to collect a good enough camera and build it piece at a time.
Free offers let you put your name on a virtual wall of fame.

Am I doing it wrong?

That needs funds for a public museum.

Fascinating. Thanks Murph.

The things you learn everyday....

Damn Shame the govt can't find the money anywhere to build the museum for such important stuff.

I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.

I think they're trying to do that Nixer.
I believe it's the 'plan', to make it all accessible to the public, eventually.
But hey, time will tell if it really happens.

Hate to see all that history go to waste.
I love history. REAL history, not 'political' history.

What if eventually some day...."nobody" had a, say, 'authentic' U.S. Calvary sword, from the 1700's.
But at the very least, this way, someone has saved it.
And they will store it properly. All of it.
Nobody can put a 'spin' on that.
If nothing else comes of it, that's something at least......arti-'facts'.

Things, not someones 'idea'.
Tangible 'things'.
Sometimes that's the only thing we can really trust.
And draw our own conclusions.

I like that.

Thanks for posting
Its Amazing that governments can find money for many things.
But collections like that get very little priority

There is a short show on the History Channel about that place. Its on the Roku. There are military artists that do paintings there and can reference the items in storage. I watched the show last week.

Well, one issue of course is that in addition the large upfront cost to build it you then have the recurring costs to maintain and staff it. It's usually not the upfront cost they balk at.

Here here Murphy.

Yeah there's something about walking into an old building or holding some artifact in your hand that quickly dispels at least surface bias and makes you really look at something different just by being in its presence.

I'd really enjoy looking at Revolutionary era things they might have. I went to Mt. Vernon as a kid but man I'd love going there again being older. Even at that age though it leaves an impression.

Coot, I guess we're just used to things that are "Real".
Times change.
Now days I guess 'virtual', is just as good as 'real', for some.

Until that 'inevitable EMP' hits, then watch that virtual world collapse,
shortly followed by the 'real' one. A lesson we won't recover from.
Maybe we rely on that 'virtual' world, a little too much...... wink
