You can realize too how France is a quasi desert.

No wonder we can't see the stars anymore when we live in or close to cities ! I remember the skies we could see during my sailing years at night...

Yep, Corsaire.
Another thing I like about rural living. No sea to sail though.

The farthest north I got in England was Derbyshire.
If I should ever get a motorbike again, I will explore Northumberland and Yorkshire.
I guess you have plenty of lakes, rivers and brooks there, being the angler you are?

Corsaire, when I was in Norway, I realised the same. Without the "light pollution",
we could see ten times more starts at night.

As an amateur astronomer, I find such photographs rather depressing. Light pollution is spreading everywhere, and in many places people have almost forgotten what the night sky looks like. They almost panic when they find themselves in a place without lights on for 24/7. Constant bright light can also have negative health effects. With more sensible use of lights, we could save lots of money and energy. But as usual, common sense seems to have disappeared from the world also in this matter. For some reason, it's become absolutely necessary to surround all public buildings in cities with military grade searchlights and constructs lampposts everywhere.

Sorry, rant over! smile

Are there really days/nights like that when there isn't a single cloud over any part of the UK or Europe? Hmmm...

Rare, but could be.
Or the image may as well be put together from many night pictures.
The exposure must have been quite long - even oil rigs and ships on the North Sea can be seen.

This is a long exposure picture, but I can tell you at sea I have often seen skies like this one at night, though of course a little darker.

Yep, been in Sweden/Norway a few times also and seen them, but when I went to the North Cape in summer, there was no night... wink
