Several times I have read about WOFF balloon busting missions, where the pilot swears he shot down the balloon, but didn't get it confirmed. Now I just made my first balloon attack in WOFF, I approached the sausage well and shot it down in the first go; and the claim notes sound promising ("Probable"); I guess I will receive it. So I further assume, that the unluckier pilots only thought, they shot the balloon down, but it was really shot down by the balloon base's own defensive fire.

Olham;
It's hard to believe with all the flying you have done that you haven't had a balloon busting assignment. That in itself is amazing! Hope you get the credit for it! Getting credit for balloons is not easy. There are so many variables at play.

Well, it wasn't my first assignment for a balloon busting mission - only the first I accepted. I never felt like doing that job before, and went out of and back into campaign again. I usually get another mission that way. I guess "Alternative target" might do the same, and even simpler?

I think it was Red Baron 2 where the balloons actually got pulled down as you approached, which means you had to hurry to get it done. That was pretty cool! Balloon busting missions are actually one of the easier ones in WOFF, I find...

Sounds odd, MudWasp. You could - like I did also - mark the balloon on your TAC, and command your flight to attack it too. My men even fired at the ground installations after me blowing up the sausage. Perhaps that's what the WOFF manager wants to see? Try it out!

I believe that balloons were not counted as victories by the British. I think the Americans did, with Frank Luke their greatest exponent. Dunno about the Germans, doubtless someone will put me right.

Balloon busting missions are actually one of the easier ones in WOFF, I find... I agree about them being easy; too easy, fact. In whatever I've read, pilots were none too excited about balloon missions, but getting them in WOFF is nothing, maybe a few holes in my plane at the worst. Is there a way (maybe something for the devs) to increase the amount and accuracy of the mg and flak around them, without just changing the overall ground accuracy setting? maybe some extra EA flying above them?

The ground fire can be set more or less accurate, if you want that - or was that only in OFF? Jim, the Germans counted balloons as victories, but some, like Manfred von Richthofen, didn't attack balloons, while others (likec Erich Loewenhardt) were specialists. From reading German reports, they didn't seem to regard them a "suicide missions" - but surely with a lot of respect. After all, they couldn't only get downed by Flak - balloons were often shielded by defensive scout groups. Here's one from the British engineers - the killing of the "Adler von Drama" or the "Eagle of the Aegean Sea": The Eagle of the Aegean Sea

Balloons are definitely far too easy in WOFF. In campaigns I now have a house rule not to chase them unless they're right on top of me, or I'm on a balloon busting mission. I follow this rule too. It would be nice if they were wheeled down as this would limit their availability to shoot at and also draw you closer to the a.a. That, or make the Archy gunners much more accurate in a zone of a mile or so around the balloon. Perhaps in later patch?

As I said, the final message might mean that YOU didn't destroy the balloon. You saw it going up in flames when you fired at it, but if it was ground fire from the balloon base accidently destroying the balloon, then you won't receive that kill, as the sim manager knows, it wasn't you who "killed" it.

Well, I think that this is "merely" a little progamming issue... I have downed roundabout 50 Ballons and got every single one of it confirmed ALTHOUGH not one Ballon-Mission was accounted for a Succes. I fly this Missons with TAC and Flight Instructor and everything on - just, to be sure. I have also downed every Ballon in a whole Area. As I said, I always get the credits for them, but no succes. Personally, I find this not overly distracting, and I am sure, that this issue will disappear within an update some time. Until then I see Ballon-Missions as cheap Victories

This is a problem that may have come back again. OBD fixed this problem in Update v1.14 (Item 12). Then it snuck back in and was fixed again in Update v1.25 (Item 4). The problem: You get credit for the balloon but no mission success and have to rerun the mission (sometimes multiple times). Make sure you are running with Update v1.26 before reporting it officially to OBD. I run 3rd Party Mission Types and have removed balloon bust missions so I no longer see this.

Ah! That was a Question I had in Mind... What is "3rd Party Mission" anyway? Flying also for HYDRA? I'll go check it out...
